GTX 1080 or 980ti

slap_shot18

So I've currently got a GTX 970 (I dont think my system specs are up to date:|) and a friend of mine has offered me a trade for a 980ti plus 250$ on my side. Should I do it or wait for the GTX 1080? I've been reading and the 1080 seems only about 30% better then a Titan X and a 980ti is about 8% worse then a Titan X in theory a 1080 will beat a 980ti by around 40% but that seems like a lot. The 600$ price point is also a bit pricey for me xD.

I also have a 500w Bronze PSU, which factors in.

Personally I'd wait until the card is actually sent out for independent reviews before making that call. If the hype holds true then definitely the GTX 1080 though.

i wouldnt run a 980ti on a evga 500b PSU personally...it might be able to do it...but it's a cheap unit and i wouldnt risk it...1080 is less wattage so this might be better for your powersupply...

If you are willing to spend the extra money, a 1080 will deliver a significantly better experience form what I've heard so far, but the 980 Ti will still be a great card for many years (more than enough) so I would say both are equally good options, just depends on how much you want to spend.

Main PC: i5 4590 @ 3.5 GHz ♦ RX 480 Armor OC ♦ 16 GB DDR3 ♦ GA-Z97-HD3 ♦ 120 GB 840 EVO ♦ 120 GB Intel 520 ♦ W10 Home

Scrapyard PC: Xeon X5460 @ 3.8 GHz ♦ HD 7870 ♦ 8 GB DDR2 ♦ GA-P35-DS3L ♦ 80 GB Intel 320 ♦ 160 GB WD Caviar SE ♦ W10 Home

it's an XFX XTR 550W Gold powersupply which is made by seasonic it's a very high-end powersupply in terms of it's internal parts that's why it's not even breaking a sweat even with everything overclocked...there is more to it than watts...the quality of the components within the powersupply unit is crucial...and yours is cheap.

well then in that case...250$ for an upgrade to a 980ti from a 970 aint bad...what models are we talking about for both cards?

fair enough :P

i would like to add...the titan X has a reference cooler...and most 980ti such as the MSI gaming card have good cooling and run at factory overclocked settings out of the box...so in a way those cards are faster than a titan X out of the box and can go up to like 10% faster if you dial in some overclock on them...

Also, i've been reading this forum a lot since yesterday and most people seem to agree that the GTX 1080 will be around 25% faster than a 980ti...not 40% i don't think so.

Now, the 1080 will have an extra 2GB of memory, it will use less energy therefore will likely run cooler and quieter and will offer better performance...but you'll have to wait a bit to get one, and you'll likely have to spend a bit more as well. The choice is yours...
