Best GPU for my i3 CPU

Space_Shift

Hello everyone!

So right now i have an Intel i3-2100 CPU and at the moment i'm using the integrated graphics to play a few games in my free time for example like Counter Strike Source and Rocket League on low settings but i would like to be able to play more games and i think it's better to get a GPU. I would stay with this CPU and because it's from a prebuilt PC that i have i will be getting other parts besides the GPU.

One option i'm thinking about it's the GTX 950 because of the price and i don't mind to turn down some settings or play on medium/high settings on some games. So i was wondering if this option would be good or should i look for any other options? I don't mind looking for used GPUs too. Any suggestions are welcome. :)

Thanks for reading! :D

With a 2xx or radeon series AMD card you will get better 'bang for your buck'. As far as Nvidia go, getting a 760 or 770 will be better performance but an older card. Seconhand or older series cards would be better for your build and specs. But then again many people will not touch secondhand parts.

Depending on your budget, my recommendations are:

The GTX 950 for $140 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B013WQCC8Q/?tag=pcpapi-20

The R9 380 for $190 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202166

If you could squeeze a used 290 or 280(x) that would be nice.

Also a used 750 ti, 760, or 770 would be good too.

This all depends on your budget.

I like to kill hardware. In 2016 alone I have killed 20 Xeon 5160, and 10+ Pentium 4.

GTX 750 Ti or GTX 950 would be my first two choices. R9 290 if you want to step it up a notch, but I think a 750 Ti would be perfect for your rig.

you'll be looking at a 750ti/950/960

i recommend against AMD cards like the r9 280(x) due to higher cpu overhead

your cpu is already not that strong, so these gpu will definitely make it worse

out of the three, i think gtx 950 makes the most sense

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Not necessarily, just better to stay with lower end GPUs

You definitely want an Nvidia card with a low end cpu like that, at least for DX11 games (and I doubt they're going away for at least a couple more years). I'd go with a GTX 950 or GTX 960, depending on how much you have to spend.

Thanks for your reply!

I will go for the GTX 950 then, i think it's a good option to pair with my CPU.:D

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry to bring back this topic but i just want to know if anyone could clarify me this question i have right now.

I will get some other parts for that i3 cpu but if i have the oportunity to get a better gpu, say like GTX 970/R9 390 and in the meantime i save up later for an i5,it would be good to stay for a while with the i3 or is it a bad idea?

If you can afford a 390 or 970, why not?

Heck, I pair my i3 with a 390X no problem

I wouldn't go too high end on the video card because you won't be getting the most out of it.  Just look how a 2500k is holding up.  OK, but clearly showing signs of bottlenecking.  And it's a lot better than your 2100 ;)

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Thanks to both for your replies!

Yeah i know it can be a bottleneck with that combination, but in the meantime i could try to save for an Ivy Bridge i5 or a i7 2600 and stay awhile in the 1155 platform until all the new stuff comes in (Zen, Polaris, Pascal).

But it was only just something i was thinking about :D, if it's a bad idea i would stick with a GTX 950 or 960.

Nope - your CPU is fine. @byalexandr used an i3 and  290 just fine. Go for a R9 380
