EVGA GTX 960 FTW SSC ACX2.0+ 2GB Vs. 4GB

Hello there

 

I am shopping for a new graphics card, a 960, and I wanted to know whether I should get the EVGA Geforce GTX 960 FTW GAMING ACX 2.0+ in 2GB or 4GB. I am wanting a FTW card though.

I originally planeed to get the 4GB version, but im not sure if I need that much VRAM.

4gb is much better. VRAM is very important, as it stores textures for rendering. Having xtra is always great.

I'd get the 4GB VRAM. 2GB can be a limiting factor in quite a few games.

 

If you don't mind personal input, the R9 380/X would be the better buy in terms of gaming performance. Also, that build is pretty unbalanced with the Z170 motherboard and the $250 GTX 960. It would make more sense to get a cheaper mobo and a R9 390/GTX 970.

Personally, I prefer NVidia over AMD, just personal

Also, the Z170 Pro Gaming is just for future expansion. I'm planning to use it in a future SLI build with a 6700k and two 980 ti's. Its also just a good board in general

If you're gonna do that upgrade I recommend waiting for the Pascal update or not buying anything now and just save some money for the better CPU and GPUs instead. Otherwise it would just be a waste of money.

Yeah, right now i'm just building a PC. The upgrade I was mentioning wasn't going to be for a while. Probably until next year, when Pascal will be out

At this price range sadly AMD offers better stuff but if you want a 960 the 2GB is best value even if the 4GB will have advantages in some games.

I just picked up an EVGA SSC 960 4gb for $150 used. If this is the card you want, it's worth looking into buying it used because 960s are crazy overpriced right now, and EVGA's warranty is the best and covers secondary owners. 

 

If I hadn't happened upon that deal I was planning on getting a retail 380/X.

If I may so ask, where did you buy that. Cant find any on Craigslist that cheap (bearing in mind we most likely don't live in the same place. A lot of people in Seattle like team red, even though Microsoft prefers green, and they are the main employer of the area)

Well, when Pascal comes out, most Maxwell cards with drop a fair amount in price, plus, I don't think they would remake a lower-mid range card like the 960 in Pascal.

Honestly, just get something that'll suit yourself now. There's absolutely no need to get something that you won't need in a long time - considering you can't even afford a CPU and GPU right now. 'Futureproofing' is a bad way to go about it.

 

That GTX 960 is insanely overpriced. Considering that an R9 380 will outperform it for $70-80 cheaper, I recommend you put aside your personal brand preference.

Reddit Hardware Swap. Lots of great deals on there, if you keep your wits about you (ie. avoiding scammers). People are upgrading their rigs all the time and selling off their old hardware so there are 960s / 380s / 970s aplenty.
