Hey all,

So I'm in the market for a second monitor for my set up, i current have a 24' 1080p IPS panel, and its pretty good. My current second monitor is a 1680x1050 22' monitor, which needs to go lol. assuming both monitors cost ~$250 (correct me if i'm wrong), which would you recommend? I do a lot of streaming and constantly have tons of tabs open and different apps up and other things.

If i get a 1080p UW, that would be my "second monitor", however if I buy a 1440p ([edit]16:9, not UW) monitor it would be the one I use to game on. GPU set up is SLI 970s

i would recommend 1440p due to pixel density most of the times,

but your gpu wont have enough vram to push 1440p UW so... i dunno, u decide which one is more important

1080p UW or 1440p 16:9, my bad should have made that clearer

i would pick 1440p for the pixel density, but your vram still might pose some issues in certain games

same goes for 1080p UW anyway

so its 21:9 vs pixel density, you decide which one is more important

i prefer pixel density

btw if you're streaming, you're most probably gonna game on 16:9,

i havent seen much streamings but i doubt anyone wanna watch a stream with two black bars on top and bottom of their screen, but i might be wrong

also, not all game supports 21:9

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I think you are overestimating the VRAM requirements in modern games and how they scale with resolution

well that might be true, but i prefer to do so because having capped vram sucks

I went 1440p UW for one game, Elite: Dangerous. Space stuff just looks and feels better in ultra-wide. But for everything else 16:9 is great. Also I found I'm exceeding 4GB vram at times, but I do like to keep settings at high. Like so many things it will depend on how much tradeoff you want between speed and image quality, here also balancing vram consumption too.

Overall, I think the 1440p 16:9 is likely the better overall option, unless you know you have something that really benefits from going ultra-wide.

1440p downscaled to 1080p for streaming and stuff is fine, I have done plenty of youtube videos and the resolution is not a problem in comparison to the bitrate that YT allows and that is going to far exceed what you can stream with. UW is going to be an issue streaming, you will probably want to set a 16:9 area for recording (which is doable) and just have the advantage shown to you alone. But UW is definitely not a secondary screen thing, its good for gaming.  I haven't been all that impressed with 1440p if I am honest, its a little sharper but its not amazing I don't think it really brings any significant difference that I notice, I care far more about the frequency upgrade and the smoothness that brings over the small increase in pixel density.
