Recording Gameplay with FRAPS with save directory over network, slows down games to a crawl

Alright, so I have a big problem with my file server right now and not too sure how to fix it. I use my personal rig to play games and record gameplay using FRAPS and the file save directory of FRAPS is on my fileserver (saved over my gigabit network)

My personal rig is intel based with an i5 4670K, 16gb ddr3 ram, 480gb ssd, and a GTX 970 4GB STRIX Edition. My file server is an upgraded HP 6005 Pro SFF PC with an AMD Athlon ii x4 640, with 8gb ddr3, 80gb intel x-25m ssd, and a 4tb WD black

I use my file server for media (music, videos, games that I am not playing currently are stored on the hard drive, and for documents, etc) I also use my file server to save my gameplay recordings, so when I play games I record using FRAPS and the save directory is on the 4tb WD black hard drive

My issue is that my fps goes down from ~80 fps to 25 or less fps, so my game slows down a looooooot. I record mostly GTA V, BF4, BF Hardline, CS:GO, and some other random games sometimes.  Should I buy more network cards (I currently use the onboard gigabit network card) and put them in my fileserver and team them in order to get a faster local connection or what can I do in order to fix my issue?

Thank you in advance for all your help! :)

TLDR; Nvidia has Shadowplay where you can record with near to no performance drop.

I dont know much about recording but according to your title you might want to try it.

Just finished reading the original/ first post.

I dont know much about networking myself, this is something i plan to learn later. However, if you are recording, i do know you should look into Nvidia's Shadowplay and considering you have a GTX 970, you should have it.

As for the networking, i would say leave that to someone else for now, sorry.

Nope.. Your harddisk is the bottleneck, if you are using gigabit ethernet.

What happens if you store your fraps locally on your personal rig?

Alright, sounds good! Thanks for the info, I will consider looking into Shadow Play once I figure out a bit more about the network. Thanks for your reply! :)

It's a 10k rpm drive, but I guess it could be a bottleneck

Works like a charm. No stutters no nothing...FPS stays where it is

Sorry about the networking again, but if have not known or have been using Shadowplay, from all the great things i hear about it, i recommend it.

Shadowplay is pretty good and has only improved over time.

I recorded this in the beta

Alright.. Upgrading your network wont help you in this regard.

You should look into the CPU usage of your nas and the general writespeed of the drive

Wow, that's not bad. I'm guessing you recorded at 60 fps? Where was your save location>? Have you tried saving over the network?

Yes, recorded in 60, but uploaded to youtube in 30 fps.

For that i saved locally, but for recording with OBS, I save on a quite beefy server on my network.

No problem, here to help ?
