CPU for testing and new computer

Hi all,

 

Recently I have made a post about my computer dying (at least the power supply and the graphics card). I have send both of these back to the vendors to get a replacement (or a repair, though the gpu is probably gone for good), but I still have no idea what the status of my motherboard, cpu and memory is. I would really like to test the cpu and memory apart from the motherboard, since I am afraid there is something wrong with the power regulation of the motherboard and I would like to avoid (if that is still possible at this stage) to fry my xeon 1231v3. I was thinking of buying a very cheap Pentium processor (+/- €35) but I will probably build a new pc somewhere in the near future for someone who will use it for office work. The three options I am considering are:

 

G1840: €35

G3250: €55-60

G3258: €70

 

The system will not be overclocked and used for Microsoft Office and an administration program. Is the extra €20-€35 worth it? Especially since there is a chance I will fry the thing the first day when I find out that my motherboard is indeed broken?

you can find the 3258 for cheaper if you buy used

Best bet is the g3250

I like to kill hardware. In 2016 alone I have killed 20 Xeon 5160, and 10+ Pentium 4.

I found one for €60, but the €5 is not really worth it to buy used IMO.

Do you know how it compares to an i3 by chance? The other option is to buy a G1840 now and then an i3 for the new PC if it is not powerful enough.

I know the difference in specs, I can also find some comparisons in synthetic scores, but they don't really show me the user experience. Since this is for a relatively simple computer I know I don't need multithreading and such, and 0.4 GHz is not a very big difference if you are not chasing fps, but I don't know how much of a difference it makes in opening and editing files and web browsing (which is basically all that it's used for).

My cb with an i3 low power chips is 350 or so and the g3250 is a solid 240.
