I'm in the market for a new 390X and I'm looking between different brands. I've come up with a few questions. First, what does a backplate actually do. I've seen several 390X cards with a backplate, and being new to GPU water cooling would like to know what this does. Also, any information on GPU water cooling is appreciated. Next, what's the best brand 390X?

Currently the highest clocked 390X is the Sapphire 390X Tri-X w/ Backplate.

Next, there's the MSI and XFX cards, which seem to be popular.

The ASUS STRIX cards, which I've heard run very hot.

Gigabyte cards, which are less popular but have good cooling.

And lastly, the TekVision card, which is cheap(<$395) but seems to be unpopular.

Any recommendations are welcome and appreciated.

I'd say Sapphire > MSI > XFX.

Don't get ASUS, they're trash for AMD cards.

Sapphire is very good.

Some GPUs have memory or other components on the back, and sometimes the backplate is used as a sort of heatsink for them. It can also be used to provide support to the PCB to reduce GPU sag and reduce the pressure put on the pcb by the GPU cooler. Generally people just get one for aesthetics as they can look good can cover up the mess of solder joints, capacitors, and what not on the back of the GPU.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.
