so display port is the best option? if so, why?

It is actually very similar to HDMI, so it streams both HD video and audio on the same cable, and can output up to 1920×1080 resolution and 8 channels of audio on a single cable.

displayport because thats the only way you will be able to use 144hz

unless both your GPU and monitor have HDMI 2.0, which it might, but best to go with DP and be 100% sure it will work

I use HDMI, and I like it better.  My GTX 660 has both Display and HDMI, as well as my monitor that has HDMI 2.0, so I have no problem I geuss.  Haha the quality went up drastically when I started using HDMI...

I'd say use HDMI.

Why is everyone saying HDMI... He won't be able to use 144Hz on his 144Hz monitor with HDMI. Not exaxtly getting the most out of his monitor. Use DisplayPort for 144Hz with audio, or DVI for 144Hz without audio. There's absolutely no reason to use HDMI, HDMI is a modified version of DVI and it uses the exact same video signal format, there's no difference between any of them in image quality, except that the VG248QE won't accept 144Hz over HDMI.
