CPU OR GPU WHAT SHOULD I UPGRADE FIRST

Hey, my system specs are a amd athlon II x2 250 3Ghz, 6gb of ddr3, And a EVGA GT520 1gb ddr3. I only want to play games at 720p (for right now) and get at least a steady 30 fps in games besides minecraft (aiming for 60 in minecraft)  What should I upgrade first my cpu or gpu, I also render videos sometimes and my motherboard socket is am3+. Im only 15 so I dont have alot of money just want to know your guys opinion.

Wow ummm both? A better gpu will be bottlenecked so I say a new CPU and save for like a 750ti

You could get quite a bit for $300. What platform does your CPU run on? I'm not super familiar with AMD hardware.

Nevermind- it's a socket AM3 CPU, and unless you find something like a used Phenom x6, you'll benefit from a platform upgrade.

See the build in my signature for a decent 1080p gaming machine at a price point of just $330.

Ill be hones, both your cpu and gpu are pretty weaksauce.

Try to get a 4 core phenom for cheap or fx 6300 at some point, but the gpu is way more important to get you going.

A 2gb 750 ti, hd 7850, gtx 660 etc will play 720p and 1080p on nice settings with a good framerate for a while,

that should be about 80 $ on ebay.

 

Around $200 to $300 

For that you can get a fx 6300/6350, a 7850/7870, a 240gb ssd and have some spare change of you need a cpu, some fans or something like that.

EDIT: My mistake- misread OP's post; not used to people running Athlon x2's on AM3+ motherboards.

I would get an fx-8350 so you dont have to worry about having to buy a different motherboard and save for an r9 380, as it has been dropping in price lately.

Hello, I only got to ask if your main goal is gaming or if you want video rendering or a little of both.  I would try to get a new graphics card because AM3+ is cheap to upgrade. A FX-4130 or a 4150 are great cheap options which are quad cores, they only will run you about 45-60 bucks on ebay and some on amazon. But I would save up to get a better graphics card. If you are looking for cheap options than look on ebay and amazon for R9-280x. I picked up a diamond R9 280x for 180 dollars on ebay and It works just fine. PS: A R9 280x is overkill for 720p

Should handle 1080p titles without a hitch, but you're going to need to overclock that CPU.

The 380 will always be bottlenecked by its graphics processor, rather than its VRAM reserves. The GPU itself will hit 100% well before the memory has the chance. In only a few select titles like Star Wars Battlefront, it's a 5-10% improvement at a 15-20% price increase; not particularly worth it, in my opinion.

but its also more expensive and needs a decent mobo with a good power phase design (or bad things will probably happen).

The sixcore should run on pretty much any am 3+ board just fine, overclocking on some better budged boards.

If its rev 3.1 the fx6300 etc. should work in it. Its pretty low end so id recommend not to put a 8350 in there.
