Samsung 950 PRO slow boot timer

Jubsi

Hi there,

I have recently bought the Samsung 950 PRO 256 GB because I wanted my computer to boot faster.
As I have been using an HDD before I expected some major improvements but to my surprise my it changed absolutely nothing.

Now I am wondering if any of you could help my out.

Here are my System Specs:

Motherboard: Asus Z170-A

CPU: Intel i7 6700K

Cooler: Corsair h100i GTX

Memory: Hyper X Fury DDR4 16 GB 2133 MHz

GPU: Asus Strix 980 Ti

PSU: Corsair RM 650W

Boot Device: Samsung 950 Pro

Other: Western Digital 1 TB HDD

I haven't done any overclocking so far.

I installed the Driver for the SSD from the Samsung from here: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/support/downloads.html

where it can be found under "Samsung NVMe Driver Installer"

Other Drivers I installed:

Graphic Card Driver from Nvidia(as well as Geforce experience)

Driver for the Cooler USB connection

Corsair Utility Engine

Corsair Gaming Headset Control Panel

My BIOS version is 1602

I changed the PCI-EX16_3 Bandwidth to X4 Mode

Other than that no changes were made.

I do not have anything else installed.

I have already tried to reinstall Windows as well as all the drivers to make sure I didn't have a faulty Windows installation.

BTW what boot times should I expect. Currently i have about 30 seconds.

I get about a 7-8 second boot time every time with an 840 Pro on Windows 10 so I'd assume you should be getting that fast or better considering I got that SSD years ago. Have you tried checking if there's a firmware update and enabling Rapid Mode on Samsung Magician (if that SSD allows it)? Also the Z170-A is the same board as mine and it has a 1702 BIOS, maybe updating that might solve something?

EDIT: I'd also suggest downloading the Rapid Storage Technology driver if you haven't, it shaved about 7 seconds off of my boot time.

First up thanks for your replies:D

Yes it is Windows 10.

As for the Rapid Storage Technology do you mean the Intel thingy or from Samsung because last time I checked the Samsung Software for the NVMe SSD said that the rapid something was not available for the 950 PRO.

Another thing I want to ask is if the boot order makes a difference.
My current boot order is

1. Windows Boot Manager

2. 950 PRO

3. WD HDD

I will update the BIOS when I get home(should be in about 7 - 8 hours)

Gonna ask the one question. If you completely remove your WD HDD from your computer, does it change anything in boot time?

I removed the HDD from my system and it changed nothing.

I will now install the BIOS update and see if that has any effect.

I have now installed the BIOS update to version 1702 and it reduced boot time to about 26 seconds.

It's still not what i would like to have but it is an improvement nonetheless.

I was able to bring it down to 22 seconds now.

For this I reset the BIOS completely by removing the battery and put it back in after 1 minute.

I don't really understand why.
Do any of you have an idea if I could change anything in my BIOS to speed it up a bit?
