According to Valve’s Steam hardware and software survey for March 2016, Windows 10 (64-bit) is installed on 36.97 percent of all devices running Steam. That’s a gain of 2.96 percent from February, and it pushes the OS past Windows 7 (64-bit), which fell to 32.99 percent last month. Overall, Windows 7 still has a slight edge if you factor in both 64-bit and 32-bit installations. Combined, Windows 7 accounts for 39.96 percent of Steam installs, compared to 38.28 percent for Windows 10. Still, any version of Windows 10 hitting the top of those charts seems like a noteworthy milestone.

It looks like the promise of DX12 has more than made of for potential security issues for gamers. Though I am on windows 10 myself, I'm really surprised about the number of people making the switch. Hopefully Microsoft will actually make good on its promises of improving things, while directX12 will also be a true improvement over dx11.

I don't really think it's the promise of DX12, pretty sure it's just that it's free and SUPER easy to get lol

What is the go to OS then for people without W10 or W7?

Well, since when does Microsoft offer a free OS upgrade? Win 8.1 only lasted 30mins on my new rig before I upgraded to 10.

It probably has a ton to do with Microsoft forcing the upgrade on people for many months, and for those who resisted it, MS would notify them daily to upgrade to Windows 10. I'm sure at least half of those who moved to W10 didn't do it by preference.

Right. I had to use a third party tool to get rid of the Win10 upgrade dialog for a family member.

Also, the title of this thread is patently wrong, in that Windows 7 is still the most used OS on Steam, and it says so in that article:

" Windows 7 accounts for 39.96 percent of Steam installs, compared to 38.28 percent for Windows 10 "

Games that would run at 20 FPS before and still dip below that run at 50 FPS stable now.

I would be interested in knowing what games did that. I've seen only a small increase over windows 7.

Combined 32 and 64 bit yes. But singular, no.

Though, there's not really a reason why 32 and 64 bit versions of a Windows iteration would be looked at different OSes, for this. Windows 7 64 bit and Windows 7 32 bit are both Windows 7.

64 bit programs don't function properly on 32 bit. Seems like enough of a reason for me, and apparently the source as well. I still remember switching between computers and having to click different files for crysis :D

According to this numbers windows xp has almost the same share as osx. Edit: And without 10,7. 8.1 has the highest share.

A 32 bit W7 user could still upgrade to 32 bit W10 for free, so it's still the same choice between W7 and W10. I just don't see 32 vs 64 bit as counting as different OSes when looking at which Windows release is most used on Steam. It's a choice between the 7 and the 10, for 32 and 64 bit alike.

I'm sure W10 is going to pass W7, eventually.

Games do require the difference, so if steam looks at it that way I still don't see why we shouldn't.

I'm a Vista fanboy. Best OS experience I've had to-date. I wonder why 32 bit is more common than 64 bit, though. I'm guessing 32 bit users tend to not upgrade their systems as much.

32/64 bit are and should be treated as different beasts. They require completely different coding and use of resources. What I don't get is why people use 32bit with newer versions of the OS... I get not changing something that works, but why would people actively buy/install obsolete versions? 64-bit is like, mid 2000s....

I'm sure I'm going to regret going there, but what exactly does Vista have over the newer versions? Apart from being buggy and un-intuitive? Like, compared to Windows 7, what's better?

Mate, I think it's just the placebo effect. You might have had a corrupted driver or an older driver in W7.

While I've been on W10 since previews, I haven't noticed that big of an improvement. It is smoother and faster for navigation and general usage than W7, but I haven't really noticed an earth-shattering difference in games. As long as they're not coded for DX12, they won't run in DX12, so it's not magic.

Yeah Win10 don't really bring any measurable performance increase in games. But they do on other tasks, their underlying kernel is so much better and modern than what they had in the past. Much more in line with their competitors.
