2x1080p or 1x1440p on 980 ti?

Zeinone

Hi LTT!

I want to add either another 24" 1080p monitor or sell my current one and get a 1440p, what's better? I'd like a dual monitor setup due to easier multitasking, but if it's so worth it to get a 1440p I might just get one of those. Don't just look from the aspect of gaming, I game just in my free time, look from a perspective of modelling, rendering and game development!

Thanks in advance!

2x 1080p give way more work space

In my opinion its better than 1440p even if you do game more then visual production because I like the nvidia surround feel.

Edit: Reading the other replies I realized that gaming on two monitors would be pretty bad...

the 980ti can handle up to single 4k so horsepower wont be a problem, and you cant game on two monitors your crosshair would be in the middle of the bezel! just add another 1080p screen for now

2 monitors are terible to game on. Purely gaming wise, either 3 1080p screens or a 1440p screen.

BUT

2 monitors in general are awesome, I really recommend you go for 2 screens, and game on one. Hell, a 1440p screen and a 1080p screen is what I'm using on this machine.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

2 > 1. Didn't you all learn that in Kindergarten?

MSI GE72 Apache Pro-242 - (5700HQ : 970M : 16gb RAM : 17.3" : Win10 : 1TB HDD : Razer Anansi : Some mouse) - hooked up to a 34UM58-P (WFHD) in dual screen

With a 2nd 1080p you'd get a lot more 'real estate' in terms of what you can do on your screen. You can even get a very high end 1080p monitor with a high refresh rate for the price of a normal 1440p panel. As well, your 980 ti will have no problem chewing through whatever you throw on it with 2 or even 3 1080p monitors. However, if what you see on your screen matters (resolution for modelling), then 1440p or even 2160p (4k) should be the avenue for you. Everything looks incredible crisper and is quite the eye candy to you and anyone who sees it.

All in all, it boils down to quantity vs. quality. In my opinion, I'd go with quality but if you like having the space, then 1080p will do just fine.

1440p Ultrawides look pretty sick :D dunno about performances on a 980Ti though

If you do rendering and other video/picture production, I'd suggest 2 1080p model.

I used to use unreal engine 4 for a bit, 2 1080p monitors is a blast.

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

I would go with 2 monitors and play games on only one of them, that way you don't get bevels right in the middle.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it! I'll see another 1080p monitor, or if i maybe see a good deal on a ultra wide 1440p (or even 4k) monitor ill take that one, but i doubt it since they are all super expensive :(

I would keep the 1080 you've got and add a 1440 for your main monitor.  It's nice for gaming and gives you a bit more real estate for productivity.  I use a 1080 144hz as my main and a 60hz 1080 as my second monitor since it's never gaming.
