Best program for MKV to MP4 (or AVI)

I have a movie I want to convert to mp4 or avi. I googled for some programs and the only free one that isn't sketchy is this bare bones converter, however it crashes every time I try to convert the video. Any suggestions on program that can convert high file size videos (around 4 GB) and is free?

No one even suggested Xilisoft video converter? neither that VLC video player also have build it video converter? 

Getting old is wonderful, when you consider the alternative.
