The prompt is, "How do Civil Rights issues of today compare to the 1960’s?". I answered with, "The Civil Rights issues of today and the 1960s are both about equality because the issues are related to LGBT acceptance, gender equality, and race stereotyping." That's my thesis and my entire essay is just describing the issues in detail then the conclusion is wrapping it up and briefly explaining why those three issues are about equality because I thought it was self explanatory. I'm pretty sure I'm not answering the prompt so what do you guys suggest I do?

is this against CoC? Not accusing just wondering.

I would mention the effect of current day social media and rapid speeds of information sharing today vs back then. A lot of papers mention that being a cause of major reform/awareness to some issues.

sauce: I wrote a paper with a similar topic in my ethics class. Got a A+ and a comment on the side saying "good point! :)" (my prof loved positive reinforcement). No you cannot see that paper. one, it's cheating. Two, I lost it lol

Over time, Civil Rights issues that have gained public attention have expanded from race and gender to LGBT, mentally challenged, and even social classes.

No. Also, no CoC any more.

Answer:

To answer any history question well, you need to have a good structure (ex-A-Level Historian here). Your introduction comes first. Here, write a general summary of the points you're going to discuss. Now, with the main body of your essay, start with agreeing with the statement or prompt. With this, you'd say something like "Civil rights issues of today are very comparable with the civil rights issues of the 1960s because..." Then, the second part of the essay should feature the other argument, how civil rights issues are similar. Then, conclude with an overview of the points that you made.

Bias is incredibly important when you're looking at history that's happening right now; I'm sure you've got an opinion of what you're studying. You should be incredibly cautious when arguing your side, maybe even overcompensate to save yourself from spending too much time on parts that you agree with.

In my A-Level History (when i was 17-18), I did civil rights in the USA 1945-68 so basically, this is what I'd recommend talking about:

  • Civil Rights act 1960, 1964, 1968
  • Voting Rights act 1965
  • Loving Vs. State of Virginia
  • NAACP, CORE, SNCC, Nation of Islam, Black Panthers etc
  • Freedom Rides
  • Albany movement
  • Birminghan Campaign
  • March on Washington
  • Freedom Summer
  • Selma Campaign
  • Black Lives Matter
  • Fergusson Protests
  • St. Louis Protests
  • President Obama
  • De Facto Vs. De Jure
  • Legal fees that adversely affect african americans

I would personally put the spin on it like the De Jure issues of the past are gone in the bills in the 1960s (mostly) but de facto segregation remains in some aspects of society. You don't need to write loads on most of these points. As a sample for the second part of the essay, I'd go "The 1960s saw protests like the Freedom Rides. This was where dissatisfied members of the African American community sat in spaces on buses that were ordinarily sat in by white members of the public. The person would then be asked to move and then they would refuse. Sometimes, this situation would become violent, in which case it proved how segregated the south still was despite such segregation being illegal. Today, protests are different and are over largely separate matters. Riots erupted in the town of Fergusson, Missouri after an unarmed African American teenager was shot dead by a white police officer who was not prosecuted. This demonstrated a struggle for equality in the legal system for African Americans because many believe that had the teenager been white, the police officer would have been convicted. Whilst it is clear that equality has not been achieved, the issues facing African Americans are different today to the ones in the 1960s."

I think what would more directly answer the prompt would be mentioning certain bills that the congress or presidents since the 60s to today have been proposed and or passed that had either a positive or negative impact on civil liberties and the expansion from just race which you and others have mentioned already.

Examples:  Roe v. Wade in the 70s and Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015.

While out of the time frame from the 60s to the 2010s, Dredd Scott v. Sandford which wasn't heard because Scott wasn't seen equal under the law. Almost a similar case for the Scottsboro boys, though I might be straying from the scope of the prompt.

Assuming he/her is from the USA. Otherwise you just mentioned a lot of gibberish.

A lot of that helped me steer it in the right direction but my teacher is only looking for a five paragraph essay which makes splitting it into two parts really hard

To be fair, only in America would a teacher give their students such a wide and ambiguous question (that you could write a book on) and expect the students to answer it in five paragraphs.

Oh, I assure you, no matter how unique Americans think they are, they do not hold a monopoly in stupidity.
