Lawmakers pushing to make owning an unregistered prepaid phone illegal

I was pointing out the fact that making something illegal won't stop criminals from breaking the law.  They are criminals because they break the law, after all.  And the argument that we should make things illegal simply because having it legal won't help is a pretty weak argument.

No it is a very strong argument if you make everything legal then they are not committing any criminal acts and could claim to be perfectly on the level and since you legalized everything from genocide to jaywalking. Making things illegal defines what is criminal and what is not.

Saying a criminal will break the law is a circular argument because if there are no laws to break they cannot be a criminal. Having said laws are what defines a criminal. Having anything being legal allows them to say impersonate people and steal personal information with no repercussions. Without any laws no warrants or investigation can be done as monitoring "law" abiding citizens that are doing nothing illegal is a bad idea. But if someone is breaking multiple laws then they can be monitored and could stop larger crimes before they happen.

As in the example of criminals paying people to use their info falsely and not report it they can be monitored and a paper trail created by a strange edge case of a person having way more accounts than possible.

Once again you are completely and utterly missing my point.

It probably won't be hard to bypass it...

And won't solve anything! As long as you keep the basic rules of burner phones in mind it's not hard to stay invisible to the gov.

Want the rules? Fine i'll give them, i got them from youtube so it's not a secret anyway :P

Do's:

Get the phones long before the operation you are going to do.

Activate/registrate them far away from the location of the operation.

If someone needs info about it, lie (obviously :D)

Stick with dumbphones, nokia 3310 ftw :D

Take out the battery when you aren't using it.

Fill the phone with fake contacts like "dad" and random number.

Try to use them as little as possible

And if you switch locations, destroy the phone and get rid of it before you switch.

Call unrelated numbers that have nothing to do with the operation so you mess up a possible pattern.

Remember the purpose of each phone/number so you don't screw it up.

And again, destroy the damn thing when you are done with it!

Dont's:

Don't turn the phone on when you are on a location that can be linked with you.

Have your main phone and your burner phone on at the same time.

Contact a non-burner number with multiple burners.

Store any real data of you or something important on it.

Match exit/entry points. (Shortly explained: if you switch burner phones, phone A will be gone and not much later phone B goes online for a certain period. That's bad. What you do want is that phone A ends it's use while phone B is already a couple of days in use and that useage period isn't the same, so use phone A for example 5 days and phone B for 8 days.)

Have 2FA on burner phones, you don't want any online accounts linked to a burner number.

So yea couple of basic things if you use burners. And if criminals are prepared to go through all this, i wil guarantee you this stupid silly rule won't solve ANYTHING.

Completely useless! It will only cause mad customers and frustration, for absolutely nothing...

Stupid, stupid, STUPID lawmakers... Go to hell, i absolutely hate you.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

In 99% of countries around the world (UK, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, US, Most of Europe) they usually are required to see proof of your identity to obtain a sim card or start a contract plan for a phone.

Even if you order a phone on amazon and get an included blank sim card with it to activate it you still need to get verified to be the person you are

btw why is everyone saying this'll hurt peoples' privacy? With a cell phone you have no privacy to begin with, even less with a smartphone.

Don't worry this isn't going to be an argument (Try to avoid those as much as possible :) )

I agreed with everything you had to say.

Anyways this is a clarification of sorts because I had redacted a sentence about a leaning of mine... I agree mostly with the Democratic Socialist but also to some degree with Libertarians.

Not sure if there's really a party that comes close to that.

Sorry for the double post,  it's impossible to work with quotes on mobile...

OT: I disagree with this Bill. The government should stay out of the market unless someone's rights were violated.

I've done that quiz before.

Wouldn't hurt to take it again but here are my old results.

What I meant with not being sure if there's like a Democratic Socialist Libertarian party. The Green Party does come close but I don't know. I kind of like the DSA though.
