Dedicated PhysX card made 980 Ti run at x8 3.0

No, my bad I guess that was kind of confusing. I just meant when I'm doing anything that is CPU intensive at all, such as playing a game.

I still recommend sticking with the same mobo you have now. There's no real reason to upgrade to LGA 2011 in your case. I still think you can get away with your same CPU, but if you really want, you can upgrade to the i7 in the same motherboard.

Agreed

I see. Thanks a lot for all the help and information everybody. I guess I will probably end up trying to overclock my processor again, I'm just not sure like what I did wrong before to introduce performance issues. It was my first time ever trying to overclock anything and I spent most of the day doing tests and trying different settings...

It made a pretty big difference though.

No, it didn't. If you have evidence that contradicts what other tests have shown not to be true, please share.

It helps when you have a lower end main GPU in a game with heavy PhysX implementation(like BL2), its not necessary for something as powerful as a 980 ti. I'm of the mind that the recent dogshit NV drivers are to blame for OP's performance issues. As they've been causing loads of problems across a wide range of games.

It could very well be driver issues. I was playing Rise of the Tomb Raider the other day all maxed out with a solid 60 FPS with DX12, and then the next day it was unplayable with the exact same settings, but if I turned it down to DX11 then it would run pretty good again, although not as well as it was. Just weird issues.

I don't need to provide any evidence. I was having an issue and I did something that made it better. That's enough for me, I'm not here to prove it to you. I just wanted some advice.

So in other words nothing. That's cool that your placebo effect is giving you better performance, as long as misinformation is not being spread about an extra card improving performance with physx, it's cool.

There were very noticeable framerate hitches and then there wasn't. I'm not sure what else to tell you.

Nvidia's recent driver issues is most likely the source of tour problems, not difficulty running physx with a 980 ti.

Indeed I did. Thank you again for your help, seems like a great community here for the most part. It's no big deal, just the internet, lol.

You were probably seeing stability issues. If you see that again, try downclocking it a few MHz.

Oh with the CPU overclocking? I was thinking I might try to stabilize it at like just 4.0 or 4.1 GHZ this time and see if that works any better. Seems like I had the right idea at least.

I didn't even know there were confirmed driver issues. Hope they release some new ones soon then.

I am not sure but maybe that i5 is bottlenecking with that 980ti.

y u get that??

btw Welcome to the fourms!

Ignore this^

The reason it's running at 8x is because you have 16(20?) Pcie lanes, your 770 is getting 8 for its physX, and the 980ti is getting 8 for what it needs. It has no performance difference between the two, because we can't fully saturate the connection with current GPUs.

Well, seriously, there is no need to upgrade your CPU. It's totally fine and i guarantee you, you won't see noticable performance gains in 95% of games when switching to let's say an i7 or so. Just overclock that i5 to at least 4Ghz, though higher would be better as long as it's stable. As others already said, the pci-e lanes are shared between your 2 cards. Even if you would populate the second pci-e slot with only a pci-e 1X Wifi-card or something similar, the amount of provided lanes for your graphics card would still be split in half - it's just the way those mobos are designed to work. However, as well as mentioned before, pcie-e Gen3 8X is a shitload of bandwith and youre not likely to see any performance losses from that end; for example, i'm running a 660ti in one of my computers on a pci-e Gen1 16X and that is still plenty. Go overclock that i5 and have fun with your configuration, it's a nice one ;)

edit: anyhow, that GTX770 really is overkill for PhysX, but YOLO, if you have it lying around, i'd do the same rather than let it collect dust.

Awesome. Thanks for all the help and information. Actually I just recently realized with all the upgrades I've been doing I can probably build a pretty good computer for my mother out of the components that I now have laying around... so I'll probably put my GTX 770 to use there. It's probably not actually doing any good as a PhysX card, as others have said.
