People with GPU backplates...

What are you experiences with them? I know they are usually easy to install but did you notice any temperature decreases or other benefits from installing the backplate? Thanks.

I think the most basic benifit of a back plate is,

interference with multiple sli or crossfire configs,

Better asthetics

if i were getting a closed and no panel case, i would no bother. Water cooling, you may need it.

I think all a backplate really does is cool any components that might be on the back of the card. The stock plate on my G1 gets a little warm from cooling something, I think it's some of the V-RAM but it might be the core itself. A backplate isn't going to have much of an impact on cooling.

Can help stop the card from sagging but temperatures won't be effected by any noticeable amount.

The EVGA GTX 970 backplate claims that it can reduce temps by up to 3C but i have yet to see any difference :P However, when running under load, the backplate does get VERY hot to the touch. You can only leave your fingers on there for a few seconds. I think the memory chips are running quite hot...

If the G1's board is laid out the same as my Windforce 3X (which doesn't have a backplate), it's VRAM on the rear which gets warm.

Backplates mainly for sturdier support, so it's not to sag badly. Some backplates are really good with to dissipate heat. Looks good too.

Makes stiffer and when holding the card you don't fear shorting it out. It also looks cool and helps cooling

Backplates never help with sagging. That's a myth. If your cooler is heavy it will bend both your pcb and the backplate which is made of thin aluminum. Backplates can help dissipate heat. Whether they look better is trivial. I personally like how the back of my GPU's look.

How is it a myth? If your cooler is heavy, the backplate will help support that load and decrease the twisting of your PCB/PCI-E connector both on the motherboard and the card itself. ALthough it's thin aluminum, it's still better than just the PCB itself. My friend has a GTX 960 with a basic MSI cooler. i feel that his card is noticeably lighter than mine (GTX 970 ACX 2.0+) but yet his sags wayyyy more. In fact, my card basically doesn't have any sag at all (you have to stare at it super closely) while his card with just PCB fails to hold straight.

If the backplate has some thermal pads it will help spread some heat. Helps hold up the GPU as well. My heavier 390x didn't flex as much as my 280x did.

I've had a backplate from ColdZero for almost a year now.

It is plastic and doesn't add any support but it has not had any noticeable effect on my card's temps.

Ask someone with an Asus strix card like the Fury Strix or 980Ti strix. Or someone like myself who used to have the stock MSI 390x cooler. The backplate itself can't combat the weight of a heavy card. Maybe the cooler cards like the 970 and 960 since they don't need that big of a cooler. A backplate can never solve a sagging issue on its own if it's due to a heavy cooler. That's why people switch to convoluted ways to solve sag like brackets or fishing line. That's why it's a myth. I'm guessing your cooler isn't that heavy anyways since it's a cool card. 

 

Here's a good example. The sheer weight of the MSI cooler that I used to use for my 390x is causing BOTH the pcb and the backplate to bend.

It depends on the specific card in question and how the backplate is integrated into the overall structure of the card.

 

I have a 980 strix. It has ZERO sag. It is not the backplate that prevents sag. What prevents sag is the bracket pictured at the top of this image:

That bracket is fastened to the rear bracket of the card and to the PCB. That is where this cards gets the majority of it's strength/rigidity to combat sag. The backplate assists to a degree by preventing the PCB from bending, but given the length of that top bracket, it provides most of the support. Even without a backplate, this card still wouldn't sag much at all. 

 

Here's a look from the back where you can see how that bracket is screwed to the end plate:

It is then screwed to the top edge of the PCB in 3 locations. It ain't gonna sag. ;) 

 

If the backplate is only fastened to the PCB and is not part of the structure supporting the card to the end plate, then it will not do much to prevent sag.

That is an excellent design. Other vendors should learn a thing or two from that. Too bad Asus took two steps backwards since the new Strix GPU's have horrible sag.

As for the main benefits of backplates... 

 

-They look good.

-Provide additional rigidity to the PCB (**but do not necessarily prevent sag**).

-Provide passive cooling for the VRMs and Vram modules.

 

You *might* see a few degrees lower temps on Vram and VRMs but the difference will not be significant.

Other than good looks? I don't know if there is any other benefit.

Some people are saying something about cooler VRM. I have R9 390 nitro with backplate and VRM temps will go to 80-90°C while gaming with low OC (no voltage OC).

When at stock speed, temps are like 87°C on VRMs.

So I'm not sure that backplate does any help with cooling VRM xD

Yeah, the new Strix DCU III is just a monster of a card. The cooler is larger, 3 fans instead of 2, larger PCB and that top support bracket looks noticeably thinner than that found on the Strix DCUII "owl" cooler.

Some people are saying something about cooler VRM. I have R9 390 nitro with backplate and VRM temps will go to 80-90°C while gaming with low OC (no voltage OC).

When at stock speed, temps are like 87°C on VRMs.

So I'm not sure that backplate does any help with cooling VRM xD 

Nature of the beast. Hawaii VRMs get hot. Not much passively cooling them with a backplate will do. ;) Having moving air blowing across the back of the card would probably be more effective.

I use a 80mm fan to cool my 290 VRM 1 and they get to 91c max with +20mv lol.

I like backplates because the back of a PCB isn't the most attractive thing.

I just don't like seeing the components on the back. I'm also not a fan if EK backplate look wise.

How do you mean 80mm fan to cool VRM? You have some universal water cooling waterblock on your GPU, but still need to cool VRM?

Usually stock coolers cover also VRM, that's why I'm confused, how do you have 80mm fan to blow in VRM 1 xD
