Hello there all,

Here is my dilemma,

Im currently running a 3570 k but ive noticed on games like Guild Wars 2, it uses all 4 cores of my CPU and I notice FPS degradation. What im trying to decide on is whether or not to get a 3770k. Im using the Asus maximus V formula MB, so in terms of CPU upgrade that may be my only choice unless i want to go extreme or something. In addition im using the Radeon HD 7970.

Now, it could just be me, and seeing 80 - 100 % CPU usage is normal, but as far as i know, seeing that means you may need to upgrade your CPU to better spread out the work that the CPU has to do to make the game run smoother.

What do you guys think?

Thank You

upgrading to a 3770k wont do anything to improve the performance. if you really feel like your framerate is dropping then just put a mild overclock on, say about 4.0ghz.

try a simple 4.0/4.2 overclock and retest, its free (you've got the parts to do it unless

your cooling is sub-par).

To be honest, i thought i was OCing. I use AI Suite II and the Turbo EVO tool allows me to overclock the cpu to 4.6. Now i wonder though, does this mean the frequency would stay at a constant 4600 MHz or does this only allow it to reach 4600 should it need it?

Thanks again

Open Turbo Evo and click the CPU Ratio tab then click the box for group tuning to make sure that all the cores are running at 4.6ghz

Ohh, i actuially did not notice this. It was set to only 1 core.

This is what i see now after your advice:   http://snag.gy/DZUIX.jpg

It seems i can increase the OC further to 6300MHz. Now im assuming this is ill advised? But then again im thinking it wouldnt be available to me if it couldnt handle it.

@blakers28 If you're getting near 80-100% cpu usage and your only seeing temps at 40 C @ 4.6ghz, somethings up, maybe only 1 of the cores is being OC'd such as @ said, If all else fails we can show you how to manually OC in the bios, and help you out from there. I'm sure tons of people on here would like to help out :P

I've heard some mixed results from OC'ing via in-windows programs like ai suite etc, where things don't turn out exactly how they should

Sorry for double post:

You can fine tune it and see what temps are with prime95 now, check and make sure everythings stable, if temps are great, I'm not sure how much further you can go with just an h100i, maybe 4.7-4.8 I'm not sure.

I also just noticed this tool allows you to OC your GPU even tho i normally use CCC for that.  If Turbo EVO is cool to use for this, i will just use this since its like an all in one kind of tool.

But I am now using Group Tuning and apparently its now OCing all cores. Ill run some tests and see how far i can take it slowly.

Thanks

Don't do that, if Turbo Evo keeps giving you crap just go into the BIOS and set the CPU speed to 4.6 and it will auto adjust the other settings. Having all the cores running at 4.6 will increase your temps so I would pay attention to them until you know you aren't running too hot.

Ok first test down, When in game, speed stays right at 4600 give or take 100mhz, and temps dont even hit 40C yet.

Ill try the same while streaming as this is when i tend to notice the issues more. And as far as the GPU boost option, im starting to think  that is referring to the integrated GPU. I havent messed with that at all since im not sure yet.

In any case so far so good, performance looks good.

It is, I have a Sabertooth board but we both have AI Suite 2.0 and the only GPU options are for the iGPU so I wouldn't bother. All it will do is increase your temps.

Ok Right now, as im playing my game, All cores are either at or close to 100% usage.

http://snag.gy/sJKCV.jpg

This is the load when running around and whatnot. Or in areas where there are a lot of people, the load will even reach 100.

At that point my stream and game will start to stutter a bit.

Ive also noticed that my streaming software (OBS) is what is causing a lot of this CPU load. Without it, i sit somewhere around 60 -70 % load. This is why i am wondering if it may help me to upgrade my CPU. I think it may distribute the load acorss the multiple threads and allow for smoother gameplay and/or stream.

Thanks again

Yeah you didn't mention OBS for streaming and that's A BIG part of why your CPU is maxed or closed to maxed out. Streaming takes a lot of CPU resources. In this situation getting an i7 would help but if you don't stream often or do it just for fun you won't need to upgrade to the i7, an i5 is enough to stream.
