Older GPUs similar to R9-380?

I've been planning on getting a Sapphire R9-380 for my new gaming build, and I'm kicking myself for missing an amazing newegg sale ($189) recently. The extra money is not a big deal but I recently joined reddit hardware swap and I've been seeing a lot of great stuff for sale. 

 

I will be playing at 1080p and not necessarily the newest games, so I realize I would probably be fine with a slightly older GPU especially if it saves me some money. R9-280/x for example. 

 

Would you guys recommend some cards to keep an eye out for? Brands too, please!

7950 is a nice one, afaik it's based on the same chip as the 380 and it has support for DX12.

And it performs still quite good.

Sapphire for AMD. The R9 380 is basically the R9 285 so I'd look out for that. The R9 280X might be something to look out for however, it's slightly more powerful than the R9 380.

I believe the HD 7970 performs on par with the 280x and the 380.

Thanks! How about on the Nvidia side? How does a 750Ti for example compare? I'm a lot more educated on CPUs at the moment, so your help is appreciated.

Okay... The R9 280x performs the same as the R9 380x at 1080p. The R9 280 performs the same as the R9 380. Only difference mainly is power consumption and vram.

Tonga is a "better" Tahiti Chip , It has texture compression the reason why the bus is down to 256-Bit instead of 384bit on the Tahiti, also newer and much better tessellation engine, Also the tonga chip has better DX12 support, unlike 7970/280X and every other GCN1.0 chip that has support for hardware level DX11.1 = most basic form of DX12 support.

I just found a R9 280X 3GB "VAPOR-X" for the same price as an R9-380.

 

What would you buy?

I would go for the 380, the 280X lacks the tessellation Power and Freesync that i am sure will become more popular with time. Also as i said, the 380 has real support for DX12 features while the 280X is a DX11.1 with base DX12 support.
