NEED HELP, AMD R9 380 STRIX ISSUE

BritTea

Hello there,

I have been experiencing many issues with my GPU and its becoming increasingly stressful when i come to play newer titles like Far Cry Primal and XCOM 2. The problem is that my game freezes for 5 seconds then i black screen with sound looping in the background then a message from my monitor saying "No Source". The company i have bought from is Novatech(.co.uk) and i have emailed them twice with a response saying that it is because of my PSU is not sufficient to run the card however on Power consumption calculators say that i need a 600W power supply to run my whole rig and i have 650W power supply. So now im wondering if its a faulty issue! can anyone back me up to think that is just a faulty GPU or is it genuinly a Power Supply issue because its either i buy a £110 850W power supply or i can get a refund and get a XFX DD R9 380 as replacement somewhere else that seems more reliable.

Please help :(

Much Thanks,
James

Refund and XFX, it's much cooler. ASUS make terrible AMD cards at the moment.

The PSU is the issue. VS are crap and not for any sort of stressful situations

May want to replace that PSU too, the quality of the internal components aren't great either.

Right so im having a look at Super Flower at the moment as that was the brand i was having a look at last month when i got an email from Novatech. Thing is they said i need a 750W Power Supply, do i need one if im running a 380? because i dont think you do!

No, you don't. PSU calculators are all useless. Get any 550W PSU that is of good quality and you'll b fine. XFX, Seasonic, or EVGA (G2 OR GS) are all good.

Uhhhh I have a Corsair VS 650W and i just ordered a Corsair RM850x Modular because im thinking about going Crossfire later on in the year. So going from a 650W to a 550W seems like abit of a downgrade to me.

850W is good for CF
550W is good for a single card.

RMx are decent.

That is the wrong way to look at it. The amount of watts is not what is the most important, the quality of the PSU is. An R9 380 can run on a 400W PSU. The problem with your current PSU is not the amount, but the quality. You can run a much more powerful and power hungry GCN 1.1 290x/390x on a 550W PSU. Like I said, PSU calculators are useless. Don't ever use them. Read reviews of the actual products where they tell you how much power they realistically consume.

Well i thank you for the rather good information. As i am an amatuer when it comes to buying Power Supplies but yes i doubled check to see if the RM850x was suitable for my needs and it is and deffinatley lesson learnt about PSU calculators. I promise not to use them again.

NOPE - VS are EXTREMELY sensitive to heat. Any form of GPU pushing them past 50% can cause issues

No problem, so just go with the either of the options I recommended above.

380 CF doesn't need 850W - it needs 650W-700W - I misread as 390 CF (390 is 280W, 380 is 140W)
