I'm about to buy the Xeon e3 1231v3 and I'm wondering if it's worth buying an after-market cpu cooler at all? Knowing you can't OC this processor, and I wouldn't anyway, is it worth using anything but the stock cooler?

If you like the Aesthetics of a certain cooler then sure, go for it, other than that there is no performance hit other than lower temps

If you want much quieter, and cooler operation, then yes.

The stock intel cooler is far too loud imo, throwing a cheap 212 evo on it will make it damn near silent and allow it to turbo 24/7.

give the stock heatsink a try and then make your decision...an hyper 212 would be quieter and the CPU would run cooler...it's 30$.

Wouldn't even have to be a Hyper 212 EVO. Something like a $20-ish compact Zalman or SilenX cooler would be more than enough to beat stock on performance and sound. The only point in getting something as big as a 212 EVO would be to pave the way for a future unlocked i5 or i7. Otherwise, it's just complete overkill.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I run my E3-1231v3 on the stock cooler and it runs mostly 50s C in games. I can get it to about 81C in the summer when running Prime95 Small FFT for a few hours, but short of running Prime 95 it's plenty cool and isn't loud on the stock cooler. Mine usually only runs at around 1.075V vcore, so no need for a big cooler.
