Dan Castellaneta's shitty guide on how to have decent JPEG profile pictures for Steam

Okay, we all know that most images processed in JPEG turn out looking like... well, shit. It doesn't have to be.

First, get your image. I will be using the below for this example.

Next, make sure you have a program that allows you to choose the compression quality of JPEG. Here, I will be using GIMP.

Now, you will want to save your image at 100 quality.

Now, you can use this picture as a profile picture.

Next, you can upload this image to Steam.

unconverted png                   100 quality

The difference is not really noticeable in the native 184x184 files, but in the smaller thumbnails.

And there you have it. Decent looking JPEG pics for Steam.

.png with 2 compression > jpeg with 100 quality.
Same file sizes too.

Would recommend making the picture more like 500x500 or even 800x800 anyways, since in some games for example the picture gets used too so a 184x184px picture upscaled to like 500x500 looks shitty.

yes.

Sometimes in Gmod server for example you will see your profile picture upscaled, with a small profile pic size it will look terrible.
