First off Don't get Norton

Norton is not a antivirus, it is the virus

Maybe malwarebytes (or PRO)

Oh aha I heard that Norton uses up a lot of ram. Oh okay.

The update pop-ups are annoying but you can easily deal with that search engine problem

Would any virus/malware still get through these though.

NO antivirus stops 100% of all virus's/malware! (But as long as you dont download "stuff" from sites that are not well known/have a good reputation they will block everything that a normal user could come into contact with)

when I bought my old laptop it came with McAfee, worst antivirus i've ever used very honestly

it wouldn't even pick up the eicar test virus, and since it's expired I get emails from mcafee every 6 months or so saying 'our av is the best come back and pay us money'

uninstalled and put malwarebytes pro and avast, nothing gets through :)

idk

Have got by with using windows defender for the main "always on" scanner, and using malwarebytes maybe a couple times a week... and if I happen to feel that I may have gotten something, then I use rootkit checker and maybe a couple of "scan only" antivirus programs. If I get really paranoid then it's a complete scorched earth policy and wipe the HDDs etc a few times and re-install the OS from a clean image.. I don't go that route many times though thankfully, pretty much the first 2 I mentioned are all that's "needed" if you're careful.

Couldn't deal with that myself. Even if it is the BEST anti-virus, I would not want that big of a footprint, it was bad enough with mcafee when I used to use that about 15 years ago, total system hog, I only used it cos was free with something I bought, that got un-installed (through much effort also) and my PC seemed like a new one straight off the bat, no more slowed down opening of files/programs etc.. I think after that I went with bitdefender, which is another one that is still pretty good OP.

Bitdefender does it's job. Malwarebytes is good too.

Malware will get throu anyway, if it's done the right way, but Bitdefender always blocked even my own encrypted trojans (don't worry, it's research material)
