290X VS 390

I dont get why but the 290x 8 gb version is like $40 more than the 390 but when I look at benchmarks the 390 beats the 290x. I am so confused why the price difference is mixed up, Anyone Know why?

Because they just didn't bother changing the price of the 8GB 290X cards

Well every newer video shows the 390 beating the 290x so I am going to believe him unless they prove to be wrong.

2. The driver it used for 290x is from older branch where optimization for Hawaii is not there while 390 use launch driver which have optimization for Hawaii/Grenada. AMD joined the driver for 290x/390 a month later iirc and 290x received boost in performance.

No, it doesn't ^^ I researched thoroughly before purchasing mine, 300 series is 200 series with some minor tweaks to improve heat issues and with better (faster) memory.

So 290X has the exact same chip as the 390X. 290 has the exact same chip as the 390. If you overclock a 290 to the 390 values it will perform around 2 FPS worse than the 390 (that's because the memory is a little better on the 390) but that's about it. Clock for clock these cards are nearly identical. So 290X (provided it's not a throttling, reference desing, but an aftermarket one like my MSI or Sapphire Tri-X/Vapor-X) it will be faster than a 390, and by overclocking it to a certain degree it will surpass stock 390X performance. One of our own LTT forum users had R9 290 Vapor-X and R9 390 Nitro, by overclocking both of them to the same degree he got identical performance within the margin of error (2-3FPS)

I personally would go with the 290x in this case.  Since it basically is a reworked 290.

 

At stock,  that 290x should already pull ahead of the 390, and you can probably get 1150mhz+ on the core with the 290x.

 

That may not seem like much,  but believe me,  an OC to 1150mhz with a decent memory overclock yields a SIGNIFICANT boost.  I got 13 more fps in valley extreme HD with a 1150/1500 OC.
