GPU Temp 98+ at Idle

Is my GPU measuring temp in °F but somehow the softwares are showing it in °C?

I have changed the themal compound and the GPU does not feel that hot to touch.

Manually changing the Fan speed does not change much either.

Can anyone tell me if I can check this somewhere?

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Vapor-X OC Boost

Not overclocked and running stock BIOS.

Use another application to measure the temperature? like precision X?

Put your hand (but do not touch) the GPU- is it melting your hand? If yes, it's broken if not, use a different program. Is the fan spinning at all? Did you set a custom curve? From the looks of it it got blazing hot and then the fan kicked in at 100%

Precision X requires EVGA Cards

I have GPU-Z
shows the same

It feels warm but not 98°

The fan kicks in at 100% from boot up..

Sapphire TriXX.

IT seems like either the GPU temperature sensor is malfunctioning, or the heatsink is not making proper contact with the GPU core/die.

I just replaced my thermal compound so even if there is a small gap the GPU should be in contact with the heatsink through the paste.

there might be a sensor malfunction but I am not familiar with any method to test it..

Get a temperature probe is another way. For example i have sabertooth motherboard which include a temp probe which in your case could work great.

This is most likely a temperature sensor issue, your PC would've most likely shut down when the GPU hits very high temperatures 95C +.

Might sound unrelated but have you tried different drivers?

That I have not yet tried. I just installed the latest drivers AMD had to offer

@MrUnknownEMC Unfortunately , don't have a Temp Probe at hand..

When I saw this I knew it either had to be Fermi or a software bug.

If a driver update / downgrade doesn't fix it then I'd assume you've got a sensor malfunctioning.

Did you try to run some games? If they worke at normal FPS it means that it's faulty sensor.

But if you'r GPU can't deliver normal amount of FPS (for eaxmple if you normally had like 60 fps and now have only like 20 or below), that means it's something else.

The card is always in idle clock mode i.e. 300 MHz may be because of the temp sensor.

As soon as I start any game temps show 100+ and the card starts throttling..

I dont have and previous benchmarks as I bought it used a while back. It was working well on the owner's PC.

Thermal compound is only for filling microscopic gaps, the heatsink still needs to make firm, even, contact to work properly.

I'd reseat the heatsink and make sure the screws that hold down the heatsink are nice and snug.

So was It doing this before you changed the thermal paste? Or was it the reason for the thermal paste change?
