Benefits of a NAS over network transfer between devices

So let's say I'm rendering a video on one computer, and I want to edit and render another video on another computer at the same time. The files are on one computer but they are on the same network. Would I be able to do that? If so, what are benefits of a NAS if the only time I will be acessing data over a local network is whenever one computer is already on anyway?
