For my streaming/gaming rig (at 1080p/60+fps) I plan on having a R9 390. I'm wondering if the different makers/company/title mean anything different for the hardware? I notice on pcpartpicker the MSI is the most common but I'm curious if they're all the same as a lot are different prices.

Thanks!

That is slightly misleading, avoid Asus and Gigabyte for AMD based GPU's, for NVIDIA ones they're perfectly fine.

XFX has a dedicated VRM heatsink. It's probably better than the MSI. Although the MSI is more popular, basically all the heat issues including my own that I've come across have been with the MSI card.

Someone needs to buck the trend and recommend a 970, just for the irony of it :D

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I haven't heard anything bad on the NVIDIA side, only ever on the AMD side. What specifically is it that's so bad on the NVIDIA side?

MSI have a heatsink that actively cools the VRMs, the issue with it is that it relies on airflow to keep temps down

TBH a plate is worlds better especially if you want to do the G10 route. All the high end cards like the Kingpin on the Nvidia side use a plate to cool the VRMs.

Yeah. There are several sub-forums talking about the horrible experience they've had with Asus products and support

I think the coolers were designed for Kepler an then ASUS didn't change the design and put them on the R9 2xx series R9 3xx series and Maxwell. Two of the heat pipes don't touch the GPU

Wasn't a save. It was a joke. And to be honest if we beat this dead horse anymore we'll have glue.

Maybe that's the glue holding this forum together! *obvious joke is obvious"

But for the sake of the OP.

MSI. Better overclocking and customer service

Sapphire. Better cooling (except VRMs)

XFX. Good overclocking and cooling

Powercolor. Similar to XFX

If anyone asks you never saw me.

No, AMD is still making the chip there for is the same GPU but the other companies make the PCB's and custom coolers and sometimes overclock them before they ship them to you this is called "Factory over clocked". For example the Nvidia gtx 970 and the EVGA Nvidia gtx 970 ssc acx 2.0 is still a gtx 970 but with a non reference cooler.

Same for Gigabyte, they for example put half of the vRAM on the back of the card when there was no need to, meaning that only half the modules actually have cooling.

Also having your VRAM at different temperatures causes instability.

Yep. I actually removed the cooler from my GTX 970 G1 Gaming and found that there was ample room on the front for the other vRAM modules+tracks.
