Can we get a little diversity in builds please?

I absolutely love LMG and I have watched way to many build logs and videos. But @Linus! Why do you only do builds that are centered around the GPU? I would love to see some builds that compare workstation style rigs. Ya know creative RAID set ups and some number crunching. I will always be a fan but man I am a worker and not so much a hardcore gamer. I would like to see a build like, "Workstation builds that kick ass for under $1,000 !". Maybe I am alone in this. If I am then please disregard. Does anyone else share my enthusiasm for some badass work rigs? Ya know stuff that makes accountants and scientists cream their pants?

I agree....it would be nice to see rigs designed for video editing, Photoshop, audio production, streaming to twitch, bitcoin mining (not that anyone would make a profit from it), folding, or even the SETI program....games are always great but it would be interesting to see builds meant for other purposes.

Maybe over time they have just worked out which types of videos typically generate more views so they're just focusing on their strengths?

Oh come on that's not what I mean... You know what I am talking about. I am talking about videos oriented around software like ESRI's ArcMap, STELLA, and conceptual work that is more CPU heavy and involves personalized (and by personalized I mean non ridiculous) build guides. There are plenty of videos like his gift guides and those are all centered around buying for your gamer. There are videos that you can pull parts of but I mean a start to finish build guide for workstations.

Those are not. You are correct but none of these are centered around the "average" joe who likes to take his work home with him and would like a workstation that can perform like his office computer

Yo bro I mean I get your point there are alot of videos that could work as what I am trying to describe. But can we at least agree that there are significantly fewer videos of workstation builds than gaming rigs? Also some of the videos are out of date for new hardware.

7 Gamers doesn't mean it is for gamers (or anyone). It  might make some sense as a render farm.

That system makes absolutely no sense for a Render Farm.

One: It is using Consumer Level graphics cards. It should be using Virtualization Grade or WS Grade GPUs to even remotely make sense for a RF.

Two: It is using an high end WS Motherboard.

Three: It simply does not have the proper networking capabilities to support the type of bandwidth that render farms require.

Need I go on?

I did say"Might", but you are correct. That PC is stupid for any task.

The "average" joe does not need a workstation.

Are you sure you understand what a workstation is? It is a very high spec computer designed for CAD, engineering and scientific computing etc. Usually has a Xeon processor (sometimes two) and professional grade video cards in the FirePro or Quadro range.

Linus builds these kinds of machines all the time (though usually with a gaming GPU, which can still count depending upon what you want to do).

If you want a machine to do your spreadsheets and emails on, then why bother building? Buy a laptop or a small desktop and you're sorted. It'll do everything you need. Alternatively, you could build a modest gaming PC, and that will still do your spreadsheets and emails, and you can do a little bit of gaming on the side too.

I'm still unsure really what you're asking for...

Lets be real most of Linus' subscribers are gamers. I'd guess more than 50-60% could be classed as enthusiast. With an even wider audience than his searching for gaming build guides/ related content. He does what I'd call higher enthusiast and networking videos fairly often with I don't believe would appeal to a ide audience.

At the end of the day its a business, that supports several peoples livelihoods. The outrageous builds are what people are searching for or what peek people's interests, hence growing his audience and increasing the size of his business. You may not like it but I guarantee if you were in his situation most would do the same as they are also his roots. I think the guys are doing real well to run it as a business producing professional content whilst keeping a largely personal aspect to the videos!

Linus doesnt do "average joe" builds anymore because as he said "it is boring". He has been in the business for many years and he used to do average Joe builds for NCIX.

He is looking for fun and new things to shoot. And there isnt much to talk about about average build.

So i inderstand why some people feel there is lack of such content.

Actually I do know what a workstation is cause I own one with 2 xeon processors and a Asus Z10PE-D16 motherboard. I mean I get it that most people do not need that kind of stuff.

I guess I made a huge mistake with the way this post went. What I was getting at is building high end computers for people who are building computers for high computational work and scientific style research. Or maybe stuff for people who are into like excessive computing for economics or market research. I mean I get what people are saying but a huge number of the videos (I would say like 80-90% ) are builds that satisfy the needs of gamers not really workers or researchers like me.

I imagine why he doesn't make such videos is because the interested demographic is so small.  There aren't very many power users that don't game.

I mean I do game as well. But I have a job and I love my job and I love doing it well. So I want to make sure that I have the hardware and configuration to do the excessive computing that I need to do. Its no attack to those who game hard core but I just hope some people realize that computers literally mean to compute and that means working. They were not created to game. Gaming was a bi-product of computer engineering. But oh well I will be unpopular opinion puffin who says that we should take a look at rigs designed for computing power and data management not necessarily GPU performance.

So you mean more or less the exact same builds as Linus already does all the time, but with a Quadro instead of a 980 Ti?

Yea, I wish he would give more advice regarding workstation pcs, seeing how I am always having to build my co-workers them.

My pc could definitely pass as either gaming or workstation though lol

I watch every LTT Video and most LMG Videos, can't say I've ever seen Linus do a "Workstation Setup for Under $1,000" mostly because it doesn't cater to a large portion of his audience, and it would be difficult to put a spin on, but I believe LMG can do it and well.

They have to cater for the majourity of their audience, themself and their budget/profit margin. Linus may not be interested or what I think is probably the real reason, there isn't enough demand for it. If the people want it, they will make it. Not enough people want it, so they don't want to spend lots of money on a "Build Log" that will be a flop.

There was the Dual Xeon project, that was not a formal "Workstation Build Log" since it was aimed for gaming, but that really someone who wants an entry level gaming PC for that much SHOULD NOT be spending it on 2x used quadcores.
