WD Blue vs WD Black

Go to solution Solved by Deli,

Seriously, WD Red isn't that much slower than black and blue. Like 145-150MB/s vs 160-165MB/s. But much quieter.

7200rpm Blue only goes to 1TB. The 5400rpm versions are re-labelled Green, which I really hate. Guess why WD discontinues the green drives?

I am going to build a PC for my friend in the near future.

He does not play game, like any sort of game.

But he likes to downloads a lot of movies and kind of store them into his hard drives.

His current pc has 1TB of hard drive, I think I am gonna build him a pc with 4TB of storage.

My question is should I choose blue instead of black?

Would he notice any kind of performance diff??

If I do choose the blue drive, which model should I choose?

Coz I heard that some blue are 5400 rpm drives, some are 7200.

Thanks in advance.

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

Blacks are faster but nosier in your case a blue would be better and go for the 7200

Also btw should I consider red or purple???

I do not believe in WD marketing teams' NAS or surveillance bullshit....><

I just want the most durable and high quality drive I can get...

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

I have dual 1TB blues and have never had issues with them

If you're going for a NAS or RAID setup, the Red drives would be the best fit, but IMO blacks are not worth the premium.

Blacks are LOUD. Loudest component in my computer actually. I'm happy with it, but it's loud. Tbh when I bought components for my computer I bought the black because it was a few bucks more and I like the color black more than blue. Lol.

I'd get whichever is cheaper.

I'd go with something like an Re or Red.

Don't go with the Black it's a waste of money for the intended purpose.

You could always see if you can find an older Green. Might get a decent deal on it.

Hi everyone, Im a newbie here. Although I have read that the WD Black is faster than the WD Blue, is there any reason why. Both product lines have models that are both 7200rpm, SATA III etc.

For sequential read and write, Black and Blue are neck and neck. For handling random small files, the Black is a little bit faster.

Black has more cache and a dual-core processor to give it a better performance in certain tasks.

Thanks @Deli for the accurate info.

I will go for red in the future, even for my self's upgrade.

Thanks!

well start believing my friend those drives are not suited for a desktop. they have different algorithms. they spin down and up frequently, the spin is slow, and other things like that

I have one rig set up with 2x2tb WD Reds, while my main rig runs a WD Black 1tb, and I much prefer the reds. I haven't noticed any appreciable difference in performance, but the reds are noticeably quieter. Unless they are both spinning up to max speed, I don't hear them, while I can often hear my black. I would go red- never had a bad experience with them and you save yourself a few bucks.

Well , Wd blacks are all 7200rpm. All wd blues over 1tb are 5400rpm ( never use those in a desktop)

Considering the cost of 4tb WD blacks. I would get a 4tb barracuda.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case
