Alright, so I'm finally considering ditching my Pentium 4 and Atom and giving them a break and going with an AM3 build. I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I'll probably put it together piece by piece. Here's the specs (so far), along with the current prices in USD. I'm trying to get everything through TigerDirect (sorry Linus).

CPU: AMD FX-6100 ($109.99)

Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair V Formula ($234.99)

Case: CoolerMaster HAF 912 ($47.99)

Thermal Paste: ARCTIC MX-4 or MX-2, (depends on which is better) ($19.99) ($7.99) Respectively.

Optical Drive: ASUS DRW-24B1ST ($24.99)

That's all I have. I was thinking like an 750-800 watt Corsair PSU and an AMD video card with similar performance to at least a 760, 770 performance for 760 price would be perfect. I'm also going to need an awesome CPU cooling solution, but I don't know much about pre-made watercooling loops (I don't know if there's any maintenance requirements or what the best one is). I am trying to have a pretty quiet build here, so quiet case fans with good performance and color scheme would be perfect. I am going for a black and red themed PC. And remember, I have to be able to get this through TigerDirect.

Go for either a H100i or H220 if you can afford it.

Try for the FX-6300.

and for the GPU 7870 or above would be good. (not sure though)

Total overkill motherboard for overclocking a 6100 =P A $100-150 board would be more than enough. (look for the features you want)

Case is cheap compared to everything else.. But if you like the case, I'm not stopping you.

Go for the cheaper thermal paste, it's all roughly the same thermal-wise.

Lol, don't get an optical drive unless you absolutely need it (if you do, spend more). You can install windows without one (saves you money)

I have almost done a build for a similar budget. I got a 7870 and a fx 6300. Although it was a tossup between the 6300 and the 6100.

I also got the zalman z9 u3 which I think looks better then the coolermaster and it has a fan controller and thermometer.

Personally, I'd bump the Motherboard down by quite a bit and throw in a 8320 instead of the 6100 unless you feel you really want said motherboard, drop the PSU down to a 600 Max if you're planning on single card configuration.

dont get a 912, the design is donkeys years old and outdated, look at other manufacturers. (no i dont care if people say cm is good, some are but most are overpriced and/or poor performance)

my friends 430 isnt as good as a sharkoon t9 (and a source 210 elite has a better design for less money)
other friends storm enforcer-£80 and doesnt have grommets, cant fit a 4 pin atx through the motherboard cutout, is noisy and parts feel cheap (ssd cages, fans, filters) and its just a 912 chassis in a fancy frock.
haf x, xigmatek elysium is better for an extreme water cooled rig and has ALL optical bays with more room for modding at the same price point. (storm stryker isnt bad though)
hyper 212 coolers are good but i get the feeling that cooler master is posing as a high tier quality brand (but isnt) but we all fell for it, and i know people will argue against me but if you pose a cm case to me i bet i can find a better option for the price or find several flaws in it...

+1 to 6300 or 8320...

Go for a cheaper motherboard (ASUS ROG boards are ridiculous for the money), get an FX 8350, AMD HD 7970 and 8GB RAM. No maintenance for a pre-filled loop, and you should get an H100i. Find cheaper, quiet fans and also 750-850W is overkill without SLI/Crossfire. Tight budget usually entails trying to get the best performance for the money. A $100 processor and a $250 board aren't going to get you there.

What is your budget, and a 6100 is a older version of the 6300

Right now, I'm gonna have to save up for every part, but the most I really want to spend in total is somewhere between $2000-3500.

That's a large amount of money--no need to spend that much especially if you know what to buy

I kind of want a case with a window that's still a mid-ATX case, but not a monster like most of Corsair's, with the usual goods like cable management and maybe a painted interior. Any ideas?
