Upgrading a really old system from XP to Windows 10

Hello friends!

I have a really old & slow computer on my hands , that has the following:

120GB HDD some sort

2GB ram

CPU is an AMD sempron 3600+ Single Core

It is currently running windows XP SP3 and it is kinda slow. The casing is some HP so my guess it was a pre built system. Will upgrading to windows 10 be worth it, or should I just reformat it using Windows XP SP3? The owners have no clue how to deal with issues , so I want to install something that is going to last on a long run.

Your CPU is gonna be trouble. I have my doubts about it being able to HANDLE windows 10.

Xubuntu or Lubuntu are great distros for old machines.

In theory you could upgrade, but really, just do a clean install of xp.

Low-end Windows tablets today are more powerful. You're going to have even more performance problems on Windows 10, as XP is already very lightweight.

Best case is to choose Linux and I recomend Mint because it looks something like xp and 7 and works dam good easy and user friendly. 

You shuold also consider hdd upgrade because it also imptoves speed and reability because if it's same age as cpu it can die any day and provably is already slowing pc down.

Win 10 will only work for best case 1 internet tab open and is gona strugle a lot.

Depending on country you live you could even get dam good used pc for low cost that is with much newer cpu.

My E8400 with new 1tb hdd and linux mint boot and works in 70 seconds Linux mint and I could make it even faster with some bios tweeks. Linux means security and updates and support.

Even today's ultra low end cpus are dual cores. That is a single core, your only options for your customer is to just reinstall XP or tell them it's time to buy a new computer.

Trying to make that thing faster ain't going to happen and your basically wasting your time on it. Replacing that HDD with a 120GB SSD, should make it feel faster, but cpu will create a bottleneck.

For upgrading from XP to 10, it's better to do a clean install, that is unless you're willing to upgrade from every release of Windows in order to get to Win10.

New PC is best for 10 but you can use that PC as a Linux machine!
