Did i just completely botch my rig?

Snapzz3

I bought the parts approx 3 weeks ago.

Here's the specs;

i7 4790

MSI-Z97-G43

Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB

Asus GTX 960

Cooler Master G550M

Kingston SSD V300 120GB

WD Blue 1TB

I'm aware that i have paired the non-k CPU (I'm clueless when it comes to overclocking) with a Z97 board, the board was on sale so i figured why not. I could've gotten an i5 4690 and a GTX 970 instead. What i'm trying to ask is, did i just fall into the "i7 trap"? Would the i5 have been good enough for what i'm doing with the PC (Gaming, multitasking, web browsing, no audio or video editing/production)?

Yes. Should have gotten the 4690k.

Especially as a gamer, the 4690k with 970 or AMD card would have been WAY better.

I always say never get non K chips unless you can hand them down to a lower powered system.

Just sell the parts you don't want or return them and get new ones.

BOINC Setup:
i5 7200U @ Stock

Core2Duo T6600 @ Stock

i3 2330M @ Stock

i5 3210M @ Stock

Return i7 and 960 > Get 4690k and 390 > Profit.

I've never owned any AMD cards so i'm a bit sceptical. I only play games at 1080p aswell.

I agree with the i5+390 idea, the R9 390 is just a much better card.

Would the XFX or Sapphire ones do the trick? The more popular brands (MSI, Asus etc..) are more expensive.

Sapphire is one of the best AMD brands, I'm using their R9 290 right now.

So i just gave the place i bought the parts a call and i can get my parts swapped for a 4690k + a Sapphire R9 390. I guess i'll give Sapphire and AMD a try.
