I want a 390X, is my AMD Quadcore a Bottleneck?

DarkJShadow

Hey Guys!

I want to upgrade my old system with a HD7750 and a Quad Core FX 4100 Prozessor (3,6 GHZ). I saved quite a bit and could get the 390X. Do you think I can get the full or almost full potential out of the GPU?

Greetings!

Yes, it´ll bottleneck like all hell.

it depends on the games you want to play

in some you will get the full potential, in other you won't

on what kind of resolution will you be playing and what kind of games?

Yes. My boyfriend has a similar CPU (can't remember the exact model off the top of my head), and got no noticeable difference in most games when upgrading his GPU from a 5570 to a R9 280X due to his processor bottlenecking him so bad. You'll definitely want to upgrade your CPU/Mobo ASAP.

It will bottleneck. You're better off getting an i5 4460 and an r9 380 if that is your max budget. You will actually see a decent improvement over what you have now.

Umm. Yes.

Not in every game - sometimes it's powerful enough to just make the CPU handle it in some games, but in many others that are more CPU intensive, you're gonna lose quite a few frames.

I have an old Samsung monitor with 2048x1120 (weird resolution...). I mostly want to play tripple A games, like Fallout, Witcher and the new Tomb Raider.

Bad to hear that I have to upgrade everything...

You haven't followed your topic, so I'll quote you so you see this.

No, you aren't going to get anywhere close to the full potential of the card. In fact, if you're still rolling around with an Athlon, I'd recommend upgrading to a new platform with something like an i5 4460 and using the HD 7750 for a while until you can afford a better GPU. Alternatively, you could get this combo instead.

It's a far better CPU and GPU than what you have now, and a decent motherboard. Assuming you have 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a quality power supply, storage, and a case, this is the best way to go.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H-A Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($41.98 @ Newegg)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R9 280X 3GB TurboDuo Video Card  ($173.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $322.94
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Whether or not a CPU will emerge as a bottleneck has more to do with the game you're playing than the video card you're using. But yes, if it's under the Athlon name and it's only 2.1 GHz it sounds like it is either ancient, a "low-power" version, or both. It would be wise to have something better for a gaming system in general.

Oh, I think I have to confess a typo... It's 3,1GHz.

My rig at the moment is able to handle Fallout and Witcher at about 25 FPS. At upper middle settings.

Well, I don't know which model you have, but while there's some new CPUs under the Athlon name they're still quite low-end for gaming and may struggle quite a bit with Fallout 4 and Witcher 3. I imagine your CPU is already the bottleneck in those games, at least some of the time.

Go for 380X :)

The 380x is probably better, I just think the 280x is a killer deal right now at that price, albeit after a rebate.

you do know that that is alot more expensive?

It's also much more efficient, cooler, vastly better at Tess and performs better overall and has 4GB of VRAM

Oh, I was wrong again... Never post anything at work with your head elsewhere...

I have an FX 4100 with 4x 3,6 GHz and 8 Gigs of DDR3 RAM.
