Soft or hard mouse pads?

Go to solution Solved by ZetZet,

Cloth mouse pads have more grip, mouse stops on it's own, hard mouse pads have more glide.

Also lift-off distance is different, but that depends on the mouse.

For optical mice you generally want a cloth pad since it has more texture so sensor has stuff to scan, however some hard pads are textured enough and work just fine with optical mice.

I need a new mouse pad. Advantages of cloth ones, or solid ones?

IDK. Just make sure whatever it is sticks on. Over time it'll ware down.

Soft because of control and comfort. Most pro's use cloth pads for these reasons. Hard pads are overrated and overpriced IMO.

cloth is cheaper

some prefer the soft feel of the cloth

cloth picks up a lot of dust really fast

you can wash cloth

since it's cheap you can replace it very often

solid is more expensive

solid lasts longer

some mice track better on solid (some better on cloth)

solit is easier to clean off dust and you can wipe it with warm water and dry out faster

pretty much you buy the solid pad just once and you stick with it

when you buy the cloth pad you tend to replace it once a year or once every two years or so...

I started off with hard pads but overtime I started liking cloth ones because they give you more control. Although my old Nova Winner 3 was a very solid hard mp with lots of texture unlike the Roccat Siru which is just glide city.

So it depends from mouse pad to mouse pad

I have a Razer Destructor 2, hard mouse mat, and love it. but it has started to wear down after about a year and a half, but that might be because it's Razer. When it was new, it fewlt really smooth and glidey, but now starts to stick a little. imo, hard mats are nicer than cloth.

I've had my puretrak talent for almost seven years now and it still tracks perfectly. If you purchase a quality cloth pad, durability shouldn't be an issue.

Hard pads also wreak havoc on your mouse feet.

my issue with the cloth pad (Steelseries QCK) was that it picked up a lot of dust very fast that just stuck in the cloth firbres, was really hard to clean out and just plain looked hideous

so I went with a Steelseries 9HD, been using that for a couple of years now, haven't noticed anything about my Mouse feet
