Worth getting another keyboard?

Go to solution Solved by Wauthar,

If you get a tenkeyless, you could carry it around more easily, which could come in handy since you are starting that degree. Just my opinion.

I currently own a Corsair K95 which uses red switches and I love it for gaming, but it's not brilliant for typing. I'm starting a computing and systems development degree soon, so I'm going to be doing a lot more typing. Do you think it's worth spending another £100ish on a brown switched keyboard just for typing?

If you feel the switch would be better for you then buy another keyboard.

I personally wouldn't.

It's subjective though, if you think that typing on browns is a significantly different experience to typing on reds, then yea maybe it's worth it.

I have a TT esports G1 MEKA, black switches, and I like it for both typing and gaming on.

However I don't do an awful lot of typing, and this is my first and only experience with a mechanical keyboard.

I think you need to decide whether the benefit you gain from the typing experience on the browns vs. the typing experience on the reds is worth £100. That's a lot of money for not a lot of difference IMO, but it could be entirely different for you.

Hope this helped :)

Only you can say if it's worth it. Since you will be using this new keyboard to its potential, I would say it's worth it but it's upto you

Yeah, I was looking at getting something like a Noppoo Choc mini as they're tiny. The membrane keyboards that I'd have to use otherwise feel horrible. If I could, I'd carry entire computer around with me so I don't have to deal with super slow HDD boot times.

I'm personally alright with typing on my reds. Browns are far nicer, there's just a learning curve for reds. It would be a bit of a waste of money IMO

Get blues or browns for typing, you don't really need to get another keyboard

Browns are good for gaming also so if you do buy another keyboard you will be at a good middle point between reds for gaming and blue's for typing, K95 is a great keyboard and if u pop that up on ebay i'd say you'd only need to pay an extra 20-30 quid for a new keyboard :)

Yeah, browns are pretty good for gaming, but I'd be looking for a small keyboard without any extra features for typing, whereas my K95 is more for looks and all the extra stuff it has on it. I love my K95 and am pretty reluctant to sell it, I just don't want to use membrane keyboards again :D

Thanks for your opinions guys. I think I'm going to wait until I actually start the course to see if I feel like I actually need a mechanical keyboard. If I do, I'll take Wauthar's advice and get a small tenkeyless so I can easily carry it around.

Mx blues from what i have seen are good for gaming also, not sure if the CLICK would annoy you though.

Yeah, the click would annoy me and the other people on my course. I find that reds and browns are still pretty noisy compared to membrane due to the way I type. I'd probably use o-rings to make the keys quieter when bottoming out.

Well, if you're considering the Noppoo Choc, you may as well consider a Leopold FC660M, I believe it comes with various switch types, mine's Clear which feels like a heavier Brown, but with a more defined bump (it's the one on top, with the red and yellow modifiers):

Another option for a smaller keyboard would be this Keycool 84 LED, mine the LED version with Black switch, it comes in various switch types and there is even a white model with PBT key caps....no LED on that one though. Keycool is surprisingly well made and is relatively cheap as well, the 84 LED has white LED for the most part, with only a few keys in green as you can see from the pic:
