Nobody gives Windows defender any credit (or much of one), its a top contender with any other virus software.   ;)

If you need more antivirus than your own brain can provide, there is something wrong with you.

Getting rid of problems on your machine should only ever have to involve clearing out the registry periodically, installing Adblock on your shiny new computer as soon as it's built in order to prevent Granny clicking on her Free iPad 2, and maybe - MAYBE - run a couple of passes with Malwarebytes if it somehow doesn't manage to prevent that.

Most 3rd party antivirus software I've had the misfortune to encounter has been total cancer, regardless of what it was. Norton, McAfee, Spysweeper, AVG, it's all been utter satan to deal with. Just use your own brain and stay away from the pr0n - you're not the 100,000th visitor!

Holy shit you guys are dense af. Tell me how common sense will protect me from something like the puush update virus?

Its clear you don't store any important info or do any work on your pc but that doesn't mean other people don't either.

Go read up on ways you can get a virus and then reply on a thread like this.

A mix of a number of free antivirus's is a good option such as the suggested Malware Bytes and Windows Defender. Panda antivirus is also a good choice. However there are better antivirus that are paid for. I personally use Kaspersky and have never had a problem with it. I'm mainly using it has the bank im banking with provides a huge discount to kaspersky customers. (I end up paying £6/year for a 5 device licence on Kaspersky Total Security 2016). Looking at the two main Anti Virus comparison websites AV-Comparatives and AV-Test. Bit Defender seems to be coming out on top.

Well.. for instance, my common sense would tell me not to use something like puush in the first place.

Sounds like somebody clicks the porn ads  :D

You're right.  I don't store important info on my pc.  I store it on an external hard drive that is not connected to my PC except for when I need it.  A practice I got into a long time ago when I was reformatting my pc almost weekly because I liked to play around with different operating systems.

But in 20 years, I've only ever had my pc infected once, and it was because I was careless.  I was in a hurry, doing other things at the time and clicked the wrong download link.

The "common sense is the best defense" idea might be old, and from an era where there wasn't the technology there is now, and sure its not 100%, but it can still be relevant. It's just obviously not for people lacking in common sense.

But, you seem to have very strong opinions about this without actually offering up your own advice, so, for people who store important info and work on their pc,what would you recommend?
