I am about to buy a graphics card. 970 vs R9 390.

TaddMSI

Also, you need to make sure you create different refresh rates for each of the resolutions if you have a monitor that's more than 60 Hz.

no you don't...you just have to check the boxes for the res that you want to be in the games and that's it.

I'm talking about using the control panel to create resolutions. That option is not there unless your control panel looks different from mine.

Creating custom resolutions in Nvidia's control panel. The old school method of downsampling before Nvidia introduced DSR.

yeah but you don't have to do that anymore? you just check the boxes for DRS once and you're good to go...forever!

@App4that said he was having trouble with DSR, so I suggested he use the old, tried and true method. I personally don't have GeForce Experience installed so I've never fiddled with DSR. Maybe you can help him since you have it.

sure, mine is in french but all you have to do is check all those boxes once and hit apply, and then when you launch a game you'll have all the resolutions you can think of available, that's it :) :

Nope, I can do 1.25% but even if I only have 1.50% checked Fallout 4 won't give me the option.

But, thanks to Ivan I have my desktop at 1440. Owe you one, looks great.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Alright, I looked through some gta 5 benchmarks from other sites and the pclab one is really fishy. Even on 1080p a 980 ti should be getting more than 68fps.

Even df's videos contradict pclabs testing. The fps was very well above 70 all the time. Even at a point it went to 140fps. But yet all the cards from pclab is underperforming by alot. I get an average of 60fps on my 390x with msaa turned on. The 980 ti should be considerably faster than that... Why is it only getting an average of 68fps on 1080p?

Meh, PCLabs result is nowhere near accurate for AMD cards and CPUs. Many tech forums stopped using them as ref years ago.

Wow, your control panel does actually different than mine. I dont have those DSR options, and I assumed it was because I didn't have GeForce Experience installed. That looks wonky though, and I think I still prefer my method. Just create the resolutions and have them automatically show up when you start the game without having to do it for each game.

you don't have to do it for each game, you check those boxes ONCE and you'll have EVERY resolution available in EVERY game FOREVER ! simple as that!

What's the refresh rate of your monitor?

60, it will overclock to 70 but I couldn't fix the screen tear in Fallout at 70. It was really bad.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

because he wanted his desktop resolution to go 1440p...if you have a 1080p monitor and still want your desktop to show at this resolution BUT you want the other higher resolution in your games you do my method...ONCE :)

I see.

Also, you now see why I'm a huge proponent of downsampling. it's not as good as having an actual 1440p or 4k monitor, but it's a free way to vastly improve your experience.

Yup. With lower end cards like the 380x, 380, 770 and 960 you can even play older less demanding games at 1440p or 4k.

Just had this exact same issue and i went with the 390 and i do not regret my decision at all. It does admittedly run hot but that should not be a problem at all if you have good airflow and at 1080p ive been able to max out any game i through at it and even 1440p runs without a hitch. if you play nvidia geared games like assassins creed you might have to turn down settings just because of driver issues but thats totally fine and ive been gaming upwards of 2 hours a day on this card and seeing absolutely no problems. go with the r9 390

what it does is that it make the images super sharp and clean it's better than MSAA 16x...but it's not as good of an effect as having the extra pixels for real :) but 4K downsampled to 1440p when you can do that it looks bad ass!
