It depends where the DRM is.  For most of history, you had to have the disk in the drive to play just for the purpose of checking that you owned it even though it didn't load anything off of the disk once the game was installed.  I'm not sure if that's changed now since disks are kind of like VHS tapes in terms of "up-to-date" technology, but if it just files for Steam for example for the purposes of saving download time, yes you should be able to play without the disk since it will just copy the files and then authenticate through Steam.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

It depends on the game, most newer games you can just download the game the disc is completely pointless. But some older games you have to have the disc to play the game. Like Sims 3 if you have the disk version you need the disk to play the game.

Never buy a PC game on a Disk. It only complicates things due to DRM.

Typically all you need a is CD key and that will let you play the game. But some games require the disk to be in the PC to play the game, regardless of anything.

If it's a steamworks game it could be cheaper on disk, and DRM wouldn't be any different to a regular steam game.

Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 both you just download through steam, you don't need the disk at all. You never even have to insert the disc into your system just redeem the activation code through steam.

Once upon a time I bought the disc version of Skyrim. I used it exactly once, and it prompted me to install steam and download a bunch more game data. After that one time I never used the disc again. More often than not, that is how things will work if you buy the disc version of a game. Really though, 9 times out of 10 you just download the game in it's entirety without a disc.

i see no reason not to get a DVD, especially if it's cheaper

it's also very easy to sell forward once you get tired of it
