You can use whatever you want...

however, there may be consequences for your actions

I'd generally avoid it as the idea of a remover is to remove all the residue and have the substance evaporate away + not eating your board is a plus. So, rubbing alcohol is always the best way to go, but i've used harsher substances like acetone before.

water works fine

alcohol just evaporates faster and helps dissolve the paste if its old and dry

if you just rub it well with a wet cloth it will work just as well

You dont really have to use anything as long as the thermal paste is relatively new it wont be really crusty and a microsfiber cloth with a bit of scrubbing will get it off without liquid.

It's about 2 months old, it came with the NZXT x61 AIO. And i bought the arctic mx4 yesterday. Also the cpu has been in a plastic case for a few days because i changed mobo. Idk it looks kinda okay.

You don't need to use alcohol. And the alcohol content of vodka isn't high enough for it to really be ideal. It's more water than alcohol, so it's not a safe idea.

Use a can of deodourant if you have to.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry for necroposting but.. If anyone reads this, what else can be used for thermal paste removal? Nail polish remover, ethanol, methanol, beer, will denaturant evaporate? And does it matter to leave absolutely no substance before applying new paste? Because come on, thin layer of some oils etc couldn't cause the CPU to heat up more, could it?

I need S340. But more Define S'ish
