i7-4790k or i7-6700k

Is the price of the skylake variant worth it? Or will they perform just the same on titles like GTA V/ Cs:Go/ Future titles?

Depends on the budget, but in most cases i7 is NOT worth for gaming.

If you're in the U.S. the current ~$100 price premium on the 6700k is not worth it. Even with Micro Center's in-store promotional prices it's still an $80 difference. If you could get a 6700k for ~$330-350 it would be worth the platform features that Z170 carries.

There will not be a distinct difference. Honestly the only reason to go skylake is for showing off the fact you have that space in your budget or you cant find a haswell based mobo with usb c or enough usb ports.

A lot of people day this but with CPU bound games such as CS:GO, GTA V, or FO4, it seems like there are better frame rates and overall better gameplay experience on the i7 chips.

Overclock the Intel Core i5 and your fine. Otherwise go with an Intel Xeon if were talking about CPU bound.

Really depends on what your playing. CPU intensive games do utilise some of the additional resources that an I7 provides (and the skylake is the most powerful consumer grade chip right now), and forgive the use of the term but, if your after some form of "futurproofing" games are starting to make use of the hyperthreading you get in i7s and will more than likely continue to do so to a greater extent in the future.

 

My opinion. An i5 (4690k/6600k) makes more sense from a price/performance perspective, i7 4790k you could consider as a middle ground, and the 6700k if you want bragging rights.

I would get the i7 4790k and be somewhat future proof. If you wanna stream in the future and if games get more obtimized for hyper threading you'll be ready.

Depending how much the price difference is, i would go for Skylake.

However, if you end up paying like 100 Bucks more.... Go for the 4790k of course.

 

Where i Live, the 6700k costs 45€ more (Boards are similar priced, maybe 10-20€).

 

For that... Well yea. I would take the more modern platform (in the overall price in the end, 50-60€ doesnt do much difference), and take the faster M.2, USB Type C etc. But thats just my opinion ;) I would feel slightly bad if i didnt had the newest. (Yes i know, not the smartest decision ^^)

 

 

As for Gaming: There ARE Games, that benefit from having Hyperthreading. For example, Watchdogs runs with 21%~ more fps just when you add Hyperthreading. But doesnt run a single % better, if you OC your i5 from 3.5 Ghz to 4.4 Ghz.

Other games also show some small benefits (of course NOT enough, to justify 100-150 bucks More Price!!). But if you're someone, who is after the last fps... i7.

So many generalizations in this thread. Yes, an i5 is probably on average a better value than the i7 and Skylake is definitely better (sometimes by a lot) than its Haswell counterpart, but you really need to know more about the rest of the build before blindly selecting a CPU. What if he has 2 AMD GPUs? He'd be totally boned with an i5, and slightly less boned if it was 2 Nvidia cards. Even a consumer i7 is not really enough for multiple GPUs or well multi-threaded games. What if he plays ARMA? A Haswell anything isn't going to get close to a Skylake variant.

 

So basically, it depends. It depends on what the rest of the build is, what he plays, what he does, and what he expects for performance. 

 

Only you can decide if it's worth it. Do you think the extra $100 for Skylake warrants the 10% average increase in performance with some spikes up to a 40% increase? That's up to you.

Go for an i5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8e0jnm39lE this is why i7s aren't that good in gaming. If you are doing editing then go for an i7, if you want to run a server/gaming PC go for a Xeon and for gaming got for an i5. The i5-4690k is a good pick.

@jjohnthedon1 wat. I just showed you that it has little to no benefit. Show me benchmarks of i5s and i7 within the same chipset, not the 5960x and the i5-4460 in a benchmark. Gaming, no editing. Most games only run 1-2 cores so a strong single core performance CPU will be onpar with an i7.
