CPU socket question.

I have an old Dell PC with a Pentium E2200 2.2gHz in it.  That processor sucks ass, but I don't really know what socket it is.  I'm assuming its a Sandy Bridge processor because of the "2200" part, but idk.  I want to upgrade this (more for fun than performance) and I don't know what processor I should get.  I was thinking the i3 2120 or something but I don't know if it would fit in the board.  Any suggestions?

A "socket" is quite literally what it means...something with the matching "form" fits into it.

The E2220 is NOT second-generation Intel Core series. It is much older.

It is on socket LGA 775.

http://ark.intel.com/products/32430/Intel-Pentium-Processor-E2220-1M-Cache-2_40-GHz-800-MHz-FSB

"Sandy Bridge" is on socket LGA 1155.

Not even.
First generation Core i series is with "Lynnfield" on LGA 1156 -- Extreme Core i series on X58 "Bloomfield" LGA 1366.

ok thank you I couldnt find the socket number.  Sorry, I was confused there for a bit.  would an i5 750 work or is that still not old enough?  This is just for fun btw, not an actual rig.

As I mentioned, not even first-generation Core i series will work with your much older LGA 775 socket.

To be completely honest, you don't have much to choose from, because of your motherboard (and age of the system).

  • 800 MHz FSB
  • 65W or under (we don't know if your motherboard can handle a higher wattage chip)
  • LGA 775 socket

The fastest you can get (I believe) is a...Intel Core 2 Duo E4700

http://ark.intel.com/products/34441/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E4700-2M-Cache-2_60-GHz-800-MHz-FSB

Even compared to today's Dual-Core Processors, it is still much weaker.

Like people have already told you, you cannot replace that cpu with anything from the "Core i" series. Funnily enough, I just replaced the Pentium e2200 in my media PC with a Core 2 duo e8200, and have noticed a decent jump in performance. I pulled it out of an old SFF lenovo I got for twenty dollars.

If you are looking for something cheap, I'd recommend trying to find a compatible core 2 duo or core 2 quad. Keep in mind the fastest supported FSB speed of that motherboard if you do.

Ok, thank you for the input.  Honestly, PC building is just a hobby of mine and I have this old computer that's fun to tinker with.  I might search around eBay for something like that.  If the entire computer fries, oh well.
