Good upgrade from 4790K - Z170 or X99? And new case.

Hey guys, so I have my income tax coming soon and I want to do some restructuring to my build. I was thinking of going to the Z170 or X99 platform. Probably the 6700K or 5820K/5930K. I typically like to upgrade a new CPU platform every 2-3 years. When I build my computer last year I knew the 4790K was a stopgap for me. I'll be selling that and my mobo/RAM to help fund the upgrade. Also looking into a smaller case. My 760T is too big for me. Want something with good airflow but somewhat portable.

What is your guys' suggestions on the platform. Which mobo's are good? Preferably Asus or EVGA. Which mid-tower size cases with good airflow and relative portability.

Thanks guys'! :)

It's not really worth upgrading from a 4790k to a 6700k.  Unless you do heavy video editing, a 5820k isn't worth it either.  I would wait for another generation of CPU/GPUs.

i wouldn't upgrade, yet. theres really hardly no benefits to going to the 6700k from where your at. now if you plan to edit the 5820k or 5930k then the answer is still the same the benefits are low compared to how much your gonna spend to get them running but if you need the 2 extra cores then go with the 5820k it seems like the better way then just going with a newer 4 core processor

Isn't the 1150 platform dead now? I believe Z170/X99 have new CPU's still coming later this year? Or should I wait until Intel releases Kaby Lake? Haven't been keeping up too much but I hear Skylake-E is coming on Z170, right?

It's dead in a sense that it shouldn't be upgraded any more.  It still performs very will and probably will continue to do so for the next 2-3 years.

I think I'm going to sell my CPU, mobo and RAM and go Z170. I know the upgrade may not be mindblowing, but I'm also planning on getting Skylake-E. This way, I'll be set with RAM and mobo. Now I just gotta search for a smaller case...

It's a waste.  Just wait for the next generation of CPUs launch on the 1151 or 2011-3 socket and buy that.  By then, prices may drop.

Even if you were using Sandy Bridge, I wouldn't even recommend you to upgrade to Skylake or Haswell-E (for Haswell-E's case, if you're gonna do some heavy video editing then you should go with that).

I'm an upgrade whore. I have to have the newest and shiniest. Even if it doesn't make the most sense. Heck, I upgrade flagship GPU's each gen.

You will not find Skylake-E on any Z series chipset you must go to an X series chipset (I.E X99=haswell-E,Broadwell-E, X79-sandy bridge-E and Ivy bridge-E) if you are want ing Skylake-E wait til it is confined which platform it will be on it may not even be on X99.

Z= consumer chips

X= enthusiast chips

Get X99, and wait for Skylake-E in Q2. I would HIGHLY recommend X99-Deluxe by ASUS for Mobo. If you are gaming, I think games are getting to the point of which they may use 6 cores. As for your case, the smallest ATX compatible case is the Cooler Master HAF XB EVO. Linus did a video on it here:

The reoccuring theme for intel enthusiast chips has been 2 generations on each socket, then a new one.

Skylake was not targeted at people who are using "Haswell" or "Devil's Canyon" ; it was mostly aimed at users with 1st and 2nd generation Core i Processors (i.e. i7-920 or i7-2600K). They advertised it as "UP TO 30% performance improvement" was from older generation CPU's; realistically, its about a 5%~7% increase from "Haswell."

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/424095-intel-i7-6700k-skylake-processor-review-legit-reviews-review-article/

Skylake-E will not be on neither X99 (LGA 2011-3) or Z170 (LGA 1151).

It be most likely be on X170 (or something in those lines)

Broadwell-E is suppose to launch in a few months.

THEY will be re-using the X99 platform...but board partners will most likely release new / updated / revised X99 motherboards.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when X99 board were released, weren't they a bit of a pile of mess when it came out... which kinda explains why even Asus's ROG boards (when I say this, I mean X99 boards made by all manufacturers were made with certain problems that it was a pain to live with that even boards in the tier that the Rampage V is in is even got alot of flak) were kinda not very well liked? I mean, the price was just the minor problem. I forgot which video it was in, but PCPer said something about X99's DDR4 RAM support/tolerance is not-really-as-good as Skylake non-E's DDR4 support.

Hope the new X99 boards don't have that problem.

I decided to go with Z170 and a 6700K. The other stuff I'll sell to help budget my upgrade. I'll most likely keep this platform for 2-3 years. Changing my color scheme to yellow and black. Will pick up the ASRock Z170 OC Formula. Won't go X99 since there's no iGPU in case I have to troubleshoot something. That's important to me.

I would wait for skylake e. But if you are intent on upgrading sooner than that, I would go with a 5930k. I upgraded from a 4770k to a 5820k. My only regret is not going up one more level. The amount of pci express lanes you gain with the 5930k will secure your system well into the future. I'm also running at 4.5 ghz on mine no problem.

The X99 platform has been available for more than 1.5 years now -- I would be ashamed if all the "technical alpha stage" bugs were not resolved by now.

You are correct, during the start of the X99 platform, there were large amounts of issues reported, but many, it not all, of these problems have be resolved.

One of my supervisors at work upgraded his first-generation i7 Extreme system to the X99 platform (ASUS X99 Deluxe and i7-5960X) about two months ago), and he has yet to run into any issues -- other than him doing some crazy stuff trying to get 5.2 GHz stable with a Corsair H100i GTX...not going to happen.

Off topic, but kind of relevant...just to throw in some laughs...please don't kill me  :ph34r:

The board manufactures would be under sooo much fire if they haven't fixed the issues on the X99 boards.
