Apple's iPhone 6S Plus smashes its Android competition in AnTuTu's 2015 Top 10 chart

For me I can see pixels on my Note 3. Thats a 1080 panel on a 5.5" phone. Now I am near sighted so I have to hold things close to see them clearly but I am not talking about touching my nose close. At around 10" away I can blocks on text on curved areas, and at 6" away I can see them quite alot. Its the only reason I want to get the 6P for its 2k resolution. 

 

But thats just me. I use my phone a lot for reading and the higher resolution is big for me. It might not be for everyone but apple is just ignorant to say "no one needs anything higher than this"

I mean, there are also people who have abnormally good vision -- think 20/5 (or 5/20, whatever's the 'better than normal' one). No blanket statement is ever accurate, but outside of a few rare occasions a higher resolution isn't particularly beneficial.

No, it's because it's pentile.

 

Pentile doesn't help as even straight lines are rittled with jaggies, but I can even see them on the few 1080 LCDs I tried. But to LCD has nothing on AMOLED.

Competition is good. Look at Qualcomm, returning back to a few cores now with teh Snapdragon 820, instead of the 810 with the 10 cores, and focus on speed. And if they fail again, maybe some other contender will come in. Maybe phone manufacture will give Nvidia Tegra chip a try.

They are going from 4+4 to 2+2. It will be very interesting to see how the 820 performs. I also have high hopes for the new Exynos chip. I am actually more excited for that than the Snapdragon.

I would not hold my breath for Nvidia. They are behind Samsung and Qualcomm at everything. Hell, their latest SoC they demoed (not out for sale yet) is still using Cortex A57.

According to some people it also seems like they are not really targeting phones with their next product. The heat output might be too high so they'll just aim for tablets instead.

Doubt it'll make much difference. My 5s outperforms my daily driver (note 5) in single threaded tasks.

That does not sound right. How did you measure that?

I mean, yes. I can see pixels on my G2 if I really squint, but I can't see jaggies.

Well i hate the fact that Apple and Android OEMs go in completely separate directions. I dont like it when people complain that their phone doesnt have a 1440p screen. IMO the GPU performance hit is not worth the resolution increase over 1080p. Heck, even 720p is fine at screens lower than 5 inches. This is what apple does and no one bats an eyelid; this is one of the ways that they can cut costs and keep up and exceed android phones when it comes to performance. 

The only  Android company that has this philosophy when it comes to phone screen and performance compromise is Sony, with their Z Compact line 

Well...my Galaxy S3 had a 720p display...that was 4 years ago , I think? Haven't we changed in 4 years , at all?

 

The truth is , we are progressing forward with pixels. We already have 4k smartphones ( even though the Z5 is  basically just upscaled 1080p most of the time). And the hardware is powerful enough to run the smartphones of these days with the higher resolutions of these days. And it's not like you need even more performance. Mobile games aren't pushing the graphical boundries , nor do they require a really high fps count . So what's the point of that better performance? What will you use the extra GPU horsepower on? Benchmarks? Come on.

 

I have an LG G3 with a 1440p display. I have a class mate (more actually) who has an iPhone 5S. One day we were both playing Hearthstone and we decided to switch phones and his first reaction was "Holy sh*t this looks so much better. It looks better than even on my computer" . And honestly, comparing them side-by-side , it did look quite a lot better. Now , I'm not sure what was the deciding factor here. Larger screen estate? Pixel density? Simply the display itself and its specific color calibration? No way to really tell.

 

And as pixels get smaller and smaller , they also get more and more efficient. Battery life can be a concern with higher resolutions display , but there are also so many other factors playing part into deciding how much a smartphone is going to last or not. My LG G3 has a terrific standby time. Screen-on time , eh , it's not bad. I can spend quite some time just browsing the web and doing casual stuff. Switch over to games however? Yeah , battery is draining really fast. But then , that's not really the fault of the screen , is it? It's just the SoC which is quite power-hungry. And if we switched to a lower resolution , we would have more performance (fps) , but the GPU would still keep working almost just as hard. So what's the point? The only real option I see would be to use lower resolution displays for increasing battery life (meaning you would get the same fps as at a higher resolution but with a lower power draw from the SoC) . I don't really have that problem on my LG G3 , since I can always just swap out the battery for another fresh one. And for the people who don't have that feature anymore , well , there's power banks. I think every classmate who owns an iPhone in my class has a power bank.

 

Or, another option for lower resolution screens could be simply more budget phones with weaker/older SoCs. That I totally understand.

 

But selling a flagship with a 720p display nowadays? It's just lazy...or an attempt to make more profit...or simply not giving a sh*t. Unless we are considering something like the Z5 Compact. I don't think it's bad , I'd say it's quite OK. I just don't like small screens , that is my preference.
