Posted January 11, 2016 I'm sure you get asked this a lot but is skylake worth the extra, say, £100. The cheapest motherboard is £50 for a matx and the cheapest i5 is about £160, which is alright but I wanted an atx.There's also the problem with having to buy new RAM due to the upgrade to Ddr4 but I could use my current ram on a previous generating processor Is it worth getting an i5 skylake and an matx with the extra cost of ram than a i5 from the previous gen and an Atx? Posted January 11, 2016 It's worth it. You can overclock non-K Skylake CPUs. Can't do that with Haswell, Ivy Bridge, or Sandy Bridge, and 1st generation Intel Core CPUs are obsolete. You need only get one of Super Micro's boards (the one Luke showcased at CES should be out soon and isn't very expensive). I don't see much reason for me to upgrade in the near future and since I have a lot of DDR3 already I'm probably going to move to something enthusiast grade before I go to anything that runs on DDR4. It also depends highly on your usage scenario. If just gaming, a cheap Haswell build will still suffice just fine. If you needed extra memory, Skylake supports up to 64GB, while Haswell is limited to 32GB (Haswell-E supports 128GB). If you needed the extra PCIE lanes, Skylake would also be a great alternative to Haswell. If you do not need the extra memory, faster memory, or additional PCIE lanes, then Haswell will work perfectly for your needs.
