Viability of AMD processors as of Jan 2016

Is getting any AMD processor right now a viable option going forward? Or should I punch my pennies and save up more for an i5/i7 Skylake or wait till Q4 2016 for KabyLake and potential AMD Zen processors?

Haswell I know is certainly a viable option but I'm looking towards the future.

What is everyone's thought on this?

Wait for Zen so you can buy Intel without questioning it.

I currently have no build at the moment. I used to have an i7-2600K paired with a GTX 560ti build mid 2011. The i7 burnt out finally and died on me. Just starting from scratch now.

I'm personally getting a Z170 MSI PC MATE and i3-6100 ( OCing using BCLK ) then going to get a Kaby Lake i7 which is going to be LGA 1151

Right now, AMD has the FX series, the Athlon series, and the APUs. If you're on a $200+ budget, please, go Intel. I cannot stress this enough unless you are doing things where more cores > better cores.

If you're on a $200 or less budget, I'd say use cases matter. The FX-8320 is a very capable CPU, especially against the i3s it "competes" with. However, its single core performance sucks ass. 

If you're on a $110 or less budget, please go for the Athlon X4 860K or Athlon 5350. The G3258 has no business sitting in any rig.

 

If you want to wait for Zen, go ahead. I don't really care. But if it's a right now situation, go based on your budget.

FX 6300 can outperform Haswell i3s and below. Mostly due to being cheaper, but performing equally or better.

FX8 is a waste of money

FX9 is a huge mistake

Athlon 860k is great for budgets

Kaveri APUs are great for super budget/HTPC

I kina like AMD but the have no really good processors on the market. The only reason to go for AMD would be wanting a quadcore, hexcore or octacore but can't afford an i5 4460. If you can go for this one or another Intel CPU. The just don't offer high performance processors at the moment.

Quad core's still a quad core, no matter how mediocre it is.

Yes, the G3258 has business somewhere. However, if it's for gaming, its business belongs in the trash bin as GTA 5 and Star Wars Battlefront, among other games, has less trouble running on shitty quad cores than it does potent dual cores.

There is literally reason to suggest the 5350 when you can get an FM2+ socket Athlon. Though neither have an upgrade path unlike a system with a 3258.

Thats why I like the AMD Athlon X4 860K very much for budget builds. In fact I dislike all other CPUs so much the next more expensive CPU I'd buy would be the i5 6400  :lol:

Only a moron buys a g3258 with the intent to upgrade later.

Any sensible human being buys a i3, fx6300 or locked i5.

In the case of Fx. Why do you need an upgrade path when you can buy something smack in-between a i3 4130 and i5 4460 for less money???
