Building another PC for a friend and require some help!:

 

Spec:

Budget £500 excluding peripherals. 

Quad Core Processor

8GB ram

1TB HDD 

Boot SSD if it'll bit in budget

Decent looking case; something like a NZXT Source 210 Elite or Shinobi

Decent graphics card that'll be able to handle new titles on medium(ish)

 

Will be mainly used for gaming and Uni work.

no SSD you would want to drop the GPU to fit an SSD there. or abandon the HDD which i don't see you doing.

It's a tiny bit over the budget, but it's very future proof and upgradeable. I suggest he gets an SSD when he has some more money.

that with a 7870 Xt, its amazing bang for buck, almost 7950 performance

I'm a noob when it comes to Radeon cards; what is its 'nVidia equivalent' in terms of price or performance just for my reference?

Slightly under a 660 Ti.

660 Ti > 7870 > 7850 > 660

Overclocking lowers the gap because the 7870 is a better overclocker than the 660 Ti.
