Considering my first upgrade

Hey all! I. Just built my first PC a couple months ago, and I'm considering my first upgrade! I think the specs are on my profile, but if not, here they are:

I5-4460

MSI R9 390

MSI PC Mate H97 MOBO

EVGA B2 supernova 750w PSU

2x4gb 1600MHz HyperX Fury DDR3 RAM

SanDisk 256gb SSD

Seagate barracuda 7200rpm 1tb HDD

I've been trying to record gameplay using OBS, and almost all of my footage has been really laggy, and unusable. A friend brought to my attention that this was most likely caused by me having a 4 core, non hyperthreading CPU. Is this correct? If it is, I'll most likely be getting an i7-4790 soon. My question is whether this CPU is compatable with all of my parts. If so, would I need a new copy of windows 10, considering that I bought the OEM? I cant do this if I would need a new MOBO, or OS.

I'm not sure, but the CPU could be the reason for the laggy footage.

 

If you consider upgrading your CPU, then I recommend the Xeon e3-1241 v3, which is essentially the same chip as an i7-4790, but it is a lot cheaper.

Almost certainly not. I would probably pass my current CPU onto some family, or sell it used.

It is a server CPU but it does fit. And because it's a Xeon, you get a better binned lower heating chip

It is a server CPU but it does fit. And because it's a Xeon, you get a better binned lower heating chip

Some more information about the recording issue: it doesn't happen in Gmod, or WoW, which are both games that run fine with only 2 cores (I think). This makes me think that the issue is caused by my computer trying to use a core to encode the recording, even though the game needs all four. The issue was most intense in GTA V, and CSGO, which are both largely CPU reliant games.

Edit: the recording is the only laggy part. In game, everything feels fine, but the recording comes out with massive lag spikes.
