Well, as the title says.. which one? Later this month or early next i'll be building a new computer from the ground up. Currently my list is done; the cpu side will be a 4790k. But i got to thinking; would it be better to go with a 6700k? Honestly, money wont be much of an object. That said I dont want to overspend or spend stupidly. Also, this new computers primary role will be gaming, and thats about all i see it being used for during its lifespan. Both cpus are around the sameish price currently. Which would you do?

I am whatever I am.

If money isn't much of an object go X99 with a 5820k, better upgrade paths if you choose to go with a better CPU a couple years down the line or decide to turn it into a multi core workstation.

If i ever go SLI, would the 28 lanes vs 40 cause problems?

I am whatever I am.

There is a sticky at the top of this forum you should read about the lanes. You could run triple or quad if you wanted to.

If you went triple or quad I'd get the 5960X though or better yet 5820 now and wait on the 6960.

If you game a lot, cpu won't really matter, there won't be any difference between an i7 4790 and a 6700 when it comes to gaming.

I am a proud 4790k owner but I'm unfortunately going to have to call bull shit.

Is it worth the cost, no. But the 6700K performs better.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I wouldn't go for a 4790k unless you already have an LGA1150 MB and just want to get the best chip available on it. Then again the whole thin PCB Skylake deal and only having 4 cores is a big turn off for me for Skylake. If I had to dish out money for a good $1800-2500 build it would definitely be on the X99. Personally I'm not wild about any of the current platforms but think X99 is still the better of the bunch. I personally am going to wait for Cannonlake-E before even considering upgrading. There isn't a right or wrong answer for you, just have to weigh your options and see what fits your budget and needs.

I dont have intel anything. So new build will be from ground up. I'm pairing a 980ti with whatever I end up getting. Looking to spend between 1500-1600 for it (already have PSU). Currently im at around $1500 for a 6700k and z170 motherboard. If I can get around the same price for x99/5820k that may be what i go with. But bottom line here is 4790k isn't worth going with if im building new?

I am whatever I am.

1150 is fine for a 980Ti, but you do have two better platforms to choose from. I actually just built an 1150 build but it was because I was going for a budget build as a Christmas gift to my dad and got the cheap unlocked 2 core. So it would be better to go skylake or x99. X99 is still top dog with the high core counts, it's still the enthusiast and workstation platform while skylake is basically the direct replacement to the 1150 for the general consumer.

I will be going with one of the better platforms. The advantage with x99 is RAM might be cheaper. I dont see a need to jump right on DDR4 yet anyhows.

X99 is DDR4, but like App4that said, it really isn't any different really in price. There are still good deals to be had.

DDR4 is the whole reason to choose Skylake over Haswell. It's probably a major contributor to the better numbers for Skylake in that video @App4that posted above. RAM speed doesn't matter is a now out of date part of gamer religion. Also, X99 is strictly DDR4, but it's quad channel instead of the dual channel that Z170 supports. So for a 16GB kit on X99 you'd want to go 4x4GB while for Z170 you'd want to go 2x8GB.

I totally wasn't thinking when i wrote that post.. I dont know what i meant to say but it wasn't what was typed..

As for motherboards, is it still "find a board over $150 that has everything you need" still? And hows Asrock as a brand these days?

I am whatever I am.

X99 is a little more than the others but that doesn't mean you need one of the $500 boards. The cheaper ones still have about anything you need. I usually go with Asus or Gigabyte. Plenty of folks say that Asrock and MSI are fine now days. You'll have to take their word on it. On X99 even the cheaper boards aren't cheap. Most of them are still $250ish last time I checked.

Any recent tests that show RAM speed making a significant difference? The only one I've seen to date that shows it making a difference is the one from Corsair's website, which I still quite frankly don't buy

Ram speed makes a huge difference, Digital Foundry has many videos dedicated to this.

Please don't make me post them for the 100th time. Please

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Digital Foundry has shown it makes a huge difference with an i3-6100 and i3-4130. They have two videos showing this on their youtube channel; search for their i3-6100 videos. It doesn't have as much of an effect with higher end cpus, though it can still increase minimum framerates significantly even with much nicer cpus. For instance, with my Xeon E3-1231v3 + GTX 970 system, my DDR3-2400 kit brings my minimum up from around 52 with my DDR3-1600 kit to 57 in GTA V and keeps me above 60 fps a lot more than with my DDR3-1600 kit. A drop from 60 to 57 is hard to notice in that game but a drop from 60 to 52 is easily noticeable and annoying to the point of making me want to drop settings to get rid of it. Fallout 4 is another game that loves fast ram. I stick at 60 fps much better with my DDR3-2400 kit than I did with my DDR3-1600 kit with the same CPU + GPU + Board (MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition). Digital Foundry has also shown ram speed to matter a lot in Fallout 4 with an overclcoked i5-4690k in their article about what it takes to get 60 fps in Fallout 4. @MageTank has shown ~10% increases in minimum framerates with DDR4 and his Skylake Pentium also. I can't wait to see his results with the i5-6600T he got a few days ago.

Fallout 4 and GTA V are the only games I have played since getting my DDR3-2400 kit, but both have shown very nice increases in performance with the faster RAM.

When it comes to raw cpu power in gaming the i7 4790K and the i7 6700K won't make a big difference. BUT if you go for Skylake you could get DDR4 RAM on your board (for example ASUS Z170 Pro Gamer) and be more up to date.

I'd prefer DDR4 over DDR3 RAM since it's almost costs the same now.

Personally I'm on Devils Canyon because my system is older. If I'd build it today, I'd go with an i5 6600K and DDR4 memory =)

[never touch a running system]
