PSA: Windforce 390 + Afterburner = Caution

Alrighty fellas,

this comes straight out of my own experience using AMD driver version 9.14.10.01162 Catalyst 15.8 (Crimson Driver Beta) and the latest MSI Afterburner version, with Rivatuner version 4.1.1

I've tested this on several different 390 variants, mainly the powercolor pcs+, the msi variant, and the gigabyte g1 gaming windforce x2. It only applies so far to the g1 gaming windforce x2.

While playing around with my new lan rig, dual 390 windforce cards, I found a bug that can cause quite the problem for card owners. I suspect it has to do with something along the same lines as the previous driver bug halting the 2/390/X fan speed at 20%, however, this is possibly more damaging.

Because the card has a 0db mode where the fans do not spin, I've found that if you toggle the "auto" option for fan speed control on msi afterburner, it will lock the fans in an off state, if they are already in their 0db mode when you toggle the option.

I've tested this multiple times, with an almost 100% success rate of locking my fans off, even when the card reaches its 95c mark and thermal throttles down.

Once again, it has only happened on those specific cards, none of the others I've tested. I've reinstalled the drivers a couple times over to see if it was a bad driver install, and I've reinstalled afterburner to check that as well.

To fix the issue, or at least, get your fans spinning again, turn off the "auto" option on afterburner, set a random fan speed, then apply. Then click auto again, and apply. As always, check your temps to make sure they're spinning again before getting back to what ever it is you do.

Rule of thumb: Never get ASUS or GIGABYTE AMD cards. There are much better options.

EDIT: Seems it's a mixed opinion.

the 15.12 version driver fixed the 20% fan bug

Asus seem to be fine... I've had a good run with mine :(

Would have to agree with you on Gigabyte cards though... Nothing buy death and destruction.

I still wouldn't make those assumptions. Sapphire might have better reputation and better cards rught now but just look at Asus' situation with Nvidia cards. The 3xStrix is garbage while the 2xStrix version was a really good dual fan cooler. You can never water it done to a whole brand being garbage. Just like with corsair PSUs.

Ok ... There is thermafa.... *caugh* ... take i avoid them like the plague, all of their products: Keyboards, PSUs, cases, etc. Never recommended any. Is there a reason yes but probably not a reason to avoid all their products although -->I<-- do it anyways. You dont have to.

Never had a problem with Gigabyte, MSI, or Sapphire. It's actually only the ASUS cards that give me a headache. My Gigabyte G1 Gaming is always on 65% spin.

65% is uberloud to me (770 TWINFROZR)and should be even more with the 3 fans on a G1 card. How can you work in the room that pc is in?

Apologies, was using the latest version but rolled back before posting to check stability. Both on the current up-to-date version through versions 4.1.x

The rivatuner version doesn't appear to make a huge difference, however, using previous crimson drivers and the catalyst drivers before it do remove the bug, leading me to believe the issue lies with the software for the gigabyte 0db mode and the gpu drivers, afterburner was only the median to access the bug. I'm working on seeing if I can replicate the bug on other overclocking software.
