5820K is more powerful, 6700K is better value (for gaming at least, the gap widens with more CPU intensive tasks)

Not really, the 5820k is only like 10-30$ more expensive and you get 4 more logical cores as well as quad channel memory support, more pcie lanes, etc.

But the 5820k is cheaper

It shouldn't be. US pricing of Skylake appaears to be a bit screwed up. Here's Australia for example:

5820K: 580AUD

6700K: 520AUD

not sure how the motherboards are done as well, but, another example using the MSI Kriat edition motherboards:

X99: 400AUD

Z170: 270 AUD

Highly subjective.

1. Only 1 directx 12 game uses more than 4 cores.

2. Intel has confirmed that Thunderbolt 3 is exclusive to the Z170. This renders the x99 as "the past".

The 6700K is better for gaming (usually), but the 5820K smokes it in everything else.

Think about it this way, Do you want a Hexacore or a OCTACORE ?

er... its 4 core vs 6 core both with hyperthreading

Do you ever want Thunderbolt 3? If so go for z170 as Intel is not bringing it to x99

6700k isn't good value for money at the moment, i would either wait for a significant price drop or get either a 5820k or 4790k, both are better value for money.
